yeah i heard noise everytime i hit a bump with only 400 miles on the car crawled under it nothing looked or fealt loose. Called the dealership they told me about the problem with the 05 model with the shaft. asked about if it coule be the struts shocks, they told me not that they know of but they will put new ones on if i would like. Then i realized that my wifes honda sounds this way... Guess driving a full size pickup for 11 years will make any noise in a small car sound different. My guess would be to maybe buy all new shocks and struts and see if there is a problem. if you take the car in under warenty you are gonna get the same oem parts

 

But that's not fair to you, that you have to pay out of your own pocket to fix their problem. I understand why you will do it, but I feel Chevy should do a Recall. Never mind, they can't 'cause there's nothing to replace it with yet.

Just gonna give a bump here. I had a rapid "pop pop pop" noise when I turn the wheel at low speeds. Parks Chevrolet here in Charlotte checked it out and has ordered me a new intermediate shaft.

Looks like this is turning into another Cobalt major issue.

 

Yep, it's the Shaft. Mine gets replaced next Tuesday--I can't wait.

BTW to Silver Streak, sounds like you have a nice 2.4

 

Sounds like the majority of these problems are coming from the 2005 models...also if you have an early 2006 model before the problems were realized I am sure that you might have the same problems...those of you with 06s having problems when did you buy your 2006 models????? in 2005 or recently?

 

I got mine at the end of August... right as the 2.4's were hitting the lots.

 

Tonite Chevy replaced the intermediate shaft. Before they replaced it, the service advisor told me they never replaced one on a Cobalt before, mine was the first. So he thought my clunking problem wasn't the shaft, he thought the rack and pinon steering. So driving home after the shaft was replaced it seems better, need a few more days to decide. Anything is better than what I had before.

I love my service advisor guys at my dealer and I highly recommend them. It's hard to find a good dealer you can trust!

 

i have had the knocking noise too, but it will usually happen if i come to a stop on a hill or maybe at times if im ona flat surface. but i hear it from the rear..what should i do? wut is it?

 

I dont really have a clunking noise but i have a popping noise near the front driver side wheel. It only does that when i am starting off in 1st gear or starting off in reverse. I took mine to chevy and they said they didnt hear it but im trying to figure out if it is normal or if something is wrong.

 

Golf Girl, does the noise seem like its coming from either side? or the middle/center?

try driving kinda slow over little bumps.... on a driveway or somthing and see if you hear it.

My cobalt had the same problem you described! slow...clunk clunk clunk... coming from the right front, for me, drive fast(or faster than ~20-25mph)... you hear nothing.

At first, my service dept. thought it was the strut.... actually so did I... cuz thats what it sounded like.... a blown out strut...., so they replaced the whole strut for me + upper strut mount etc. and they also replaced the sway arm bushings and upper mount.

I got the car back...bout 4 days later..., SAME problem as before! So I took it back in and they found out it was the lower Control Arm/Bushings( "A" Arm as some ppl call it) the whole time! So they replaced that and now all is well.... matter of fact...., the ride now feels better than it did did when the car was BRAND new... I think my control arm was bad from the factory and it just got progressively worse?? OR it was all these goddam MI potholes that killed it all is good now tho.... Anyway Good Luck!

 

it was pretty loud when I had the problem...

 

maybe if someone comes out with better lower control arm bushings this would eliminate the prob and get even better traction if you have the upper control arm bushings from jbp or whome ever else sells them now.

 

I had the same problem in mine at about 9000 miles. They replaced the intermediate shaft, steering rack, and the steering column. Noise went away, then there was a grinding noise about a week later in the steering wheel, took it back and they put another steering column in. I also have had both front struts replaced due to leaks (before I even put my eibachs on)

 

I got my 2006 in septemeber of 2005 and I have the same problem. going to take it to the dealer this week sometime

 

Mine does it when I shift into 1st, and second a little, after that i dont hear it unless I have to go from a stop.....it's annoying as hell. I got my 2005 in late March last year. Im going in for service soon anyway.....

 

had the shaft thing done and now they are going to do a sterring gear kit

 

still the same ... doesnt gm techs test drive the cars after there done working on them lol now i have to take it back for the freaking 3rd time and on top of it they f.... up my oil life dic thingy

 

they put in a new intermediate shaft in mine today. The thump isn't as bad as it was before but I still have a slight thump. Should I bring it back?

i had that clankin noise too, but it was at my rear right tire. i brought it to my dealer and they fixed it. 2 days later but..no noise anymore. my rotor was warped..so it was bangin against the struts. i have a new one on it and yes i love the silence now when im cruising.

 

well after the intermediate shafts were replace, i still experience a small clunk not anywhere near as bad as before. So I took it to the dealer and they said the small clunk over bumps is normal??

 

Do you think my service guy is trying to pull a fast one on me?

 

Well gm called me today wanting to get information on my service went for my car. Well I told them my problem i've been having with my steering column. I said I brought it in the first time and they fixed the intermediate shafts. My car is still making the thump after having that fix and now the dealership says thats normal and nothing they can do about it. The lady at GM said she will contact management immedietly. Do you think she can get my dealership to actually fix my problem?

 

every small GM car has this THUNK. Just upgrade to a better strut if thats the case. Cheap as hell. I dont know why you would trade it in, that'd be dumb.

Or a better idea, take the car in since its under warranty and have the front end checked out. There isn't much to check, should be extremely easy to spot it. You got struts, springs, axles, ball joints and tie rods to check out...
