front suspension = clunking noise?
#176
I have this same noise, and it annoys the hell outta me. It's the same noise and its getting louder and louder (when you go fast you dont hear it as much). Has anyone gotten it fixed?
#177
it is a lower control arm. I almost 100% am sure, i didn't even read all the posts so if someone already said it, sorry. haha but i work at car x and cavi, pts, neons, and balts are horrible for this, also bad on grand ams, take it to another shop and have them look at it, then tell chevy to fix it.
since they wont have a recall for this lets all get together and file a law s.

Looks like I'm joining the clunking club. Took it to the dealer on saturday, "nothing is wrong with it." Bullshit. It is this nasty grinding noise when I launch from a stop, and when I change into second gear in the lower RPM range. They said they looked at all of the components on the front wheels/steering assemblies and everything was buttoned up tight. I'm going to bring it in to have them look at the steering column stuff and the lower control arm

The noise comes all the time driving straight... when I turn i dont hear it, but if I turn the steering all the way to the right, I get a hard knock that is felt through the steering, maybe the bushing or bearing?
It's either that or something wrong with my tires, because I lifted the car and let it run, did not here the ticking noise at all. Only comes when the suspension has weight on it.

They will not fix the problems. Chevy is a bunch of idiots. i have a 2006 cobalt and it has been in the shop 5 times already. it has 6,000 miles on it!! the girl that had it before me got rid of it due to the fact it almost killed her! i have already been rounds with the headquarters and they dont want to do anything about these death traps of cars. so i have been gathering up information on them. so if you have anything about ur car being in the shop please notify me. i am over their games. and i am going to play back. i have been in contact with a lawyer. these cars are not SAFE!!

I beleive there is a TSB for that. If you get a 'cluck' when turning the steering wheel all the way side to side then the dealer should fix that. I think they replace or re-lube an intermediate shaft in the steering column.
The noise I get is a loud, deep, shudder/rattle in the front suspension (felt through the steering column) when I'm driving slow over bumpy roads or sometimes just while braking. I took it in thinking it was what the TSB was for, but the dealer said 'Yup, they can hear the noise, but it's normal'. It makes the car sound pretty junky, but as long as it's not a serious problem, or one that will get worse, I can live with it.

My car has a steering clunk issue and the dealership has replaced the intermediate shaft twice, front driver strut and strut mount, steering column and steering motor. The clunk was fixed for about 4 months and now its back again. I'm prolly not going to bring my car back cause it's not like it affects my driving it's just annoying. Do you think if I lower my car it would make my problem worse or not affect anything?
please contact me.
i sent gm a email today about the steering thump in my car and how the dealership replaced the intermediate shaft and it's still doing it again. Now the dealership says the thump in my steering is normal and can't do anything about it. Hopefully gm will do something about it.

Clunk!
my favourite noise as a GoodWrench advisor.
I have fixed lots of clunks on balts and pursuits including my own G5 GT.
The drivability clunk (forward motion/ over bumps etc.) is the front lower control arm bushings. The replacements don't seperate and delete the clunk from the front arm.
The clunk in the steering is always the I-shaft, (like almost all of GM vehicles) due to a cheap supplier that provided GM with hundreds of thousands of i-shafts that lose their lubrication after time. - I have been told there is now a new supplier - and the replacements and new units are in production.
As far as Amanda in Tennesse is concered, I think these vehicles are perfectly safe, and I have no reservations about my fiance driving our G5 every day. I will admit that they are the General's low-line vehicle. They all have quirks and part failures, (like every other vehicle on the planet ) but a death-trap they are far from.
Good Luck Amanda with your lawyers and your battle. - A lot of people tried the same thing with the 3.4L lower intake fiasco.
To my knowledge, their rendezvous and ventures all still leak coolant.

K, just to update, the last few days the LOUD clunking is NO MORE (I DIDNT EVEN DO ANYTHING), now it has a sorta silent clunking noise while coming to a stop.... (when I slow down and am in the speed range of 20 km/h or less). It doesnt not come on turns, only while driving str8, and I can now drive with the passanger window down and not having to hear the anyone loud clunking.

I believe I have the I-shaft problem as I only hear this clunking when steering at low speeds and do not hear it at all at faster speeds, but what I am concerned about is that this clunking did not become aparent until after installing Eibach Sportlines. Should I be worried about bringing it to the dealer to see if they will replace the I-shaft? BTW, these are my car specs: 07 Cobalt SS/SC w/ Eibach Sportlines and Injen CAI

bump, i just need to know if i can bring my cobalt in with it lowered and be able to get the i-shaft replaced without them saying some bullshit about somehow voiding my warranty?? anyone please

No TSB's but they have been splitting and we are now stocking 30 extras at a time.
it fixes the forward motion clunk everytime we have one.
ill do some reading tomorrow and see if i can at least find the SI diag procedure for it.
did you get your new I-shafts? our new revised ones do NOT ever require lubrication and are apparently much better (for the SV6/UpLander) - time will tell!

it is a serious problem....mine has been in the shop 5 times... and just to let you know because of their screw up on designing these cars it eats the front tires and the brakes are bad... it almost killed a girl...
It has to do with the way they have designed these cars. they are junk and a death trap. i have been talking to the headquarters...do you by any chance have the reciepts of those fixes? mine has been in 4 times... and i have been talked to an attorney about these defective cars... chevy isnt fixing them they are covering it up until they go out of warranty... i only have 6,000 miles on my car. I talked to the girl who had it before and it almost killed her..
they wont do anything. ive already talked to district manager. they wont do anything about the problems. what is wrong with your car? I am getting people together. to collect all the information i can. i have been talking to an attorney. these cars are death traps...
please contact me.
that wont fix the problem. i already had that done. intermediate shaft.... both sway links...tired twice... radio...you name its been done. they were not made correctly..
doesn't fix the problem....
GM will not. ive talked to them and they are ridiculous. these cars are death traps. i am gathering information on them...so if you have any receipts please let me know. i have contacted an attorney...

I dont really have a clunking noise but i have a popping noise near the front driver side wheel. It only does that when i am starting off in 1st gear or starting off in reverse. I took mine to chevy and they said they didnt hear it but im trying to figure out if it is normal or if something is wrong.
I have the same noise youre hearing.
Went to the dealership today and they at first thought it was the axles.
But it turn out to be the lower control arms."play in bushings"
Have them check out
I bet that the same problem youre having, sure sounds the same.
Hope you get this message, if not I will pm you
