GM customer service and my steering colum
so im out of warranty 05 ss s/c 52k miles
my steering column is ****, feels loose and rattles n all this ****. Ive already had the intermediate shaft replaced but like 30k ago. I brought it to a non gm mechanic and he said its the column. I had 2 other HHR's that made the same sound and it was the steering column (at like 850 price quote)
So i tell gm service rep this is bs the car is fairly new for needing a 850 repair, and i know its common. I also mentioned it could be a safety concern.
now this is my question:
The service rep wants me to have a GM dealership look at it. Thats another $100 just for them to look at it. Which I already paid a mechanic 70 to confirm what I thought. They even called me back a few days later to see if I had got it diagnosed yet. SO does it look like they are going to help me out? Or am I going to be out $100 again? WTF DO I DO????? I can fix sway bar links and **** like that, but the column is but ass expensive
ok any advice or opinions is reeeaalllllyy cool

While my ss sc was and still is under warranty, gm replaced the whole column. There were several steps they had to go thru to get clear to the replacement of the column, but they did it. Just as a note, I had to take back a 2nd time because my blinkers wouldn't cancel after a turn right after they replaced the column..Turns out there is a service bulletin on it that says anytime the sterring column is removed / replaced they have to also replaces some kind of sensor that controls the blinkers being cancelled after a turn. Good luck with that.

Mine went to... Had it replaced under warranty at 25k. They put one out of an '07 in mine. I think there is a TSB on this. The intermediate shaft U-Joint didn't get lubed when they where built. I would look into that

Sorry bro, my steering column has been replaced 2 times already for that exact same issue. I went through so much aggravation with the dealership and they fucked up every single time they did work on my car, now my steering column doesn't rattle by my steering wheel isn't correctly aligned with the wheels so I got to hold it to the left for it to go straight (it doesn't pull or anything)... that's after 8 times of being at that dealership, I figured once the weather clears up I'll just fix that myself and wait until this column goes out as well so I can go for my 3rd one.

have u seen how many consumer complaints are listed for the very single problem i have? its not one bad experience, we have another chevy in the family. Just as disappointing. and where did you come up with the assumption this is my first problem? At work we have 2 2007 HHR's both need steering columns at 50k "coincidentally" just like my car. So perhaps my opinion goes a bit further then just my car seeing i have 3 cars with the same problem and 4 total chevys im having trouble saying I would buy again.

Again......I bought a brand new 4 door 2005 black base cobaltthat I owned for 8 months, very bad experience. Traded it in for a brand new 2005 Cobalt SS and had nothing but problems since I bought it , only now in the past 10000KM out of 95000KM has it actually been alright! And also in june of 2005 my GF bought a blue 2 door base cobalt brand new which now currently has 65000KM and has been driven only back and forth from her work feels like complete ****!! I have a 94 dodge colt with 240K which feels new compared to her car! So again, not one bad experience but 3, coincidence? I am not saying that when my SS is working properly it isn't very fun to drive because that would be a complete lie but for me to have spent about 8 months going to and from garages to get the 3 cars fixed is complete BS!

incase anyone cares (of course) dont go to the stealership
they want 1100 for replacing the steering column
gmpartsdirect.com $350 for a NEW column, its like 3 or 4 bolts to put in you can do it yourself or a mechanic can do it less then a hour. Save some money and dont go to the dealership

I only find if annoying that GM has had rattling steering system issues for so long. So many trucks, W bodies and other with the intermediate steering shaft, which still seems to be an issue this day. As for the whole column...wtf? That's nuts.
Mine's just shy of 8000km's and it already sounds really loose over bumps at low speeds and it pops and makes noises in parking lots, so the car's going in tomorrow. Don't feel too bad...
