How to change out blower motor fan?

My blower fan has this annoying ticking sound like there is a leaf or something stuck in the fan blades inside the dash, and you can only hear it when the HVAC is on 1 or 2 for the fan speed. I'd like to take it out and examine it and possibly replace the fan if it needs it. I looked in the How To section of the forum and didn't find anything on removing this. Can someone help me out? Pictures would be great.

^No it's not, normal operation all you hear is the air moving...but the fans in the cobalt's are pretty well known for that annoying ticking.

My gf's stratus does it too, drives me nuts. I also will be replacing/fixing mine when i get the chance to.

Maybe to you if you're used to listening to a busted blower motor fan. I prefer to fix mine so it's not annoying.

Any one fixed this before that's got some tips/pictures?

From these posts you can tell that it's normal. It's all part of driving the cobalt!!

I am the type of person that doesn't let the stupid piddly crap keep annoying me until I eventually sell the car. If it's doing something it's not supposed to be doing, I'm going to fix it. Hence why I'm going to be putting a new Ho2 in after Christmas, stupid CEL comes on every 1,000 or so miles with P1133...at least I know that's not a difficult task. The blower fan though, I'm not sure how easy or difficult it is.

remove glove box, look under neath, there is the hvac box; remove wire connector, undo three 7 mm head bolts, remove blower motor. replace.

early redlines require the cutting of motor and plate with a knife out of the hvac housing and replacing with a steel ring and sheet metal screws.

Thanks for that. Doesn't sound difficult at all, I'll try and knock this out one of these weekends coming up.

np I just changed my redline one for the same reason, its been bugging me for a couple of years and I finally just did it. Its easier on a cobalt, the hardest part is removing the glove box lol

My blower fan makes the same noise, has been doing so since about 10k miles. I'm now at 33k miles and it's still aggravating the **** out of me. I just make sure my radio is up when the fan is at low speed

So is it just the fan blade itself or did you replace the whole assembly, motor and all? Does anyone know what causes this so if I do replace the whole thing I can help prevent it?

I'm going to say it's the bearings in the fan.

Awe are you serious? I asked the same question when I first bought my Balt because in the winter when it's cold it squeels like a pig till it warms up. Everyone was telling me you had to cut it out like you are saying with the Redlines so I said screw it. I'm definitely changing it now haha.

I don't understand what is meant by "early redlines"... I know what they are in engineering (I'm a mechanical), I know what it is on the tach, but I don't understand in this context what is meant by it... Can you please explain?

Also, when I cut the plastic housing, would it be wise to screw the new ring in place first and trace around it, then remove it and cut between the traced out area?

My thinking is that I know I will get a good seal. Is that right?

I found some instructions on a website that had some sketches, not sure if I can post the link here, so I won't, but it's not real clear, and they are calling something a cup and saying I will get a new one with the blower motor kit. Do I reuse the piece I cut out? I won't get a knew one, right?

I found a kit that has a round ring with 6 holes... range from 83 to 120 or so in price, blower motor, and some screws... I'm thinking I reuse the chunk of plastic I cut out......

Please help. This is so ridiculous to have to cut a part of the car out.
