Do not say that R-134A is not as good as R-12. I asked this to an A/C serivice guy once and he said he can make R-134A blow just as cold or colder than R-12. It's all about the proper pressure (charge) and the other components, ie, condenser, evaporator, blower.
Also for those who do have the pollen filter mounted behind the glovebox over your blower, check it!! I pulled mine out a few thousand miles after getting my car just to see what it was made of and I was surprised at what was already on it. I knocked off the large debris and put it back in.

Haven't had a problem yet staying cool. Yesterday we were at 101 degress in Denver, and I was fine in the car.

yeah, I replaced my passenger compartment filter back around aug of last year. I actually did something today that helped cool the car off a little more today, I opened up the sunroof for an extended period of time and let the hot air escape the cabin. Helped a little bit, I still think the A/C is a little puny on these things. My mother has a 00 Aurora and an 05 Malibu, they both cool great, of course they also have automatic climate control where the LSJ cars have the knobs with the blue/red mess. oh well, maybe I'll pack ice cubes in the glove box?!?!?!

I live near Tampa and the AC is about par for a small car. A lot of car makers use a smaller than ideal compressor or a larger than ideal pully so that the car doesn't give up too much power at low RPM with the AC on. Sitting at idle, it's not the coldest in the world (esp if you're just getting started) but while moving or after it's been on a bit, it's fine. All in all, it's not bad, not great, but def not bad.

Got a question on a/c as long as it's being talked about...I've seen some people run the a/c without the car running. I was under the impression that that's a horrible thing to do to your car / a/c system. Is that true, or is it just a huge drain on the battery?

You can't run the A/C with the car off. Only the blower is running; the engine has to be on to run the A/C compressor.

Also, everyone, close the far passenger side vent to boost airflow to the other three vents, be sure to use the recirculation mode and keep your filter clean.

I Really Thought It Was Ok Until This Week But That Could Be Just That It Has Been Like High 90's With Humidity So Thick It Feels Like A Wet Sticky 110 Out. You Could Put Me In A Cooler And I Would Still Feel Hot Lately.

110+ weather in phoenix. The requirments to keep your car cool here is tint at any level and a sun shade. The A/C in this car works great to cool things off quickly but you need to know how to use it. Don't recirculate the hot air in the car by blasting the re-circulate option. Use just the A/C to cool off the car first and when it feels comfortable use the recirculate option to keep the already cool air even cooler.

Exactly. And for best results, crack your windows and/or sunroof when you're on the regular a/c setting. Close them up when you switch to recirc.

yes this works to suck the hot air out even faster resulting in faster cooling ability.

I don't exactly live in a hot climate...we've had a few days where it's been up to the mid 80's and I can't leave my AC on for more then a few minute before I have to turn it down or off, because it freezes me out of the car.

If my AC wasn't able to keep me cold I'd be at the dealer every moment I could be until they fixed it...to the earlier comment...these aren't economy cars, they're compact cars...the optra/aveo etc are GM's econo cars...and before anyone chimes in with "there's no difference" drive one of them then try saying that.

Edit: wow I read through a bit of that mazda thread...sounds like some of those guys' AC system isn't working at all.

Even if these were economy cars, it does not matter because my friends Neon and escort get much colder, and they get colder faster. The escort gets so cold so quick that it freezes. My car is simpily not capable of this. Even when it is 60, it seems that it does not get as cold as the escort does when it is 80+. I also find the difference in opinion interesting. Some on this board say thier cobalt is really cold, some say it almost does not work. Perhaps some just do not work right.
