if this is true, i wouldnt have to change my oil for like 1.5-2 years
i usually use castrol or valvoline and change when i get it out in the spring or when my meter gets to like 40% or 3-4k...switching to synthetic this spring/summer though

Wow this thread is so informative. I have not seen another like it so I am subscribing. Also, all of the recommendations that differ from the manufacturers based on millions of miles of testing seem like great ideas.

I run Amsoil 5W30 in both of my cars.
Just did 10,000 miles with it in the Volkswagen. Sent a sample to Blackstone Labs to be tested. They said it looked great, try 13,000 next time.
I tried a few in the Cobalt. Hated Royal Purple. Mobil 1 is good, but takes second - its just a bit thinner than the rest, and that's what I don't like about it. Amsoil is all it will see after the engine build though. Always seemed to run a tad smoother on Amsoil versus the others.
Anyone changing their oil at anything less than 5,000 miles is just wasting money and good oil. Synthetic Oil has come a long way.
Have your oil tested: http://www.blackstone-labs.com/
