The one key I was given last week for my new 06 cobalt lt sedan starts the car, but the key itself wont open the doors or trunk. The remote does but requires a lot of pressure and holding the buttons for 30+ seconds. Door buttons are ok some days and need to be held other days.
Local shop was quite confused about the key issue... thoughts on what it could be?

so you just purchases a used 06, you were given one key with the car and only works in ignition.

Maybe the ignition was replaced? idk...

Does the other key work in both the ignition and doors or is that the only key you have?

As far as the fob goes, I'm going to bet it is either a low battery or a failing remote (either the button contact pads are going bad, or your battery clip is coming undone).

Would be my guess....no idea why they wouldn't have the other key though.

Maybe it was a real "steal" of a deal

hmm never thought of that.. anybody know if it is possible to get a key made for the doors without an original?

Take your title, or other proof of ownership documents, along with the VIN to a dealership. They should be able to cut you a new key.

could be a valet key. it only runs the ignition. or doors and trunk could of been replaced.

It is more likely the ignition was changed out.

But yeah, VIN cut as mentioned by insylem. I forgot about that option.

yah thats true, but my brothers care has 3 diffrent keys for the out side and 1 for the ignition.
