Any less, they COULD back off and your wheel fall off,
Any more, and you risk damageing the studs and breaking
them, or weakening them to where they break.
The damage could have been done several wheel removals ago
to the point where it was weaked even by proper torque on the time
after that. Metal Fatigue is weird like that. The shope before the
last shope that messed with it, could have done it as well as the shop
before them.

ive had this happen to me but i caught it right b4 the last lug snapped off. ****** sucks. the dealer put my wheels on and after a couple months of driving the lugs loosened and started snapping them off. wheel was making a weird noise like u explained and i caught it with just the one lug holding.
ive also had the dealer use a air gun to put my lugs on cross threaded. both time they would not do anything.

I'll tell ya exactly what happened. The lugs were put on with the impact, people think that impacts torque the **** out of your wheels, infact that not really true at all. What happened here was whoever put the wheels on put them on with the gun, and didn't torque them correctly. When you work in a shop you get a feel for the right torque. Also, aluminum rims need to be re torqued 100 miles after taking them off. When you heard the noise instead of running to the dealer you should of pulled over and checked the torque on the lugs.

i have had 17 lugs snap on the cobalt. i replaced them all now with aftermarket and have not had a problem since. Never had them all snap at once. I would replace them all man. at least your cars ok
side note always tighten at 100ft lbs. to much less and they will come lose. i would go over 120 tho.

alright so i was talking to a buddy today and gave me an idea. If i take the car home, put stock wheels on and then towed to a different dealership do you think that would work as far as getting it done under warranty? or will they know i was denied at another dealer? thoughts?

Are the aftermarket wheels you have lug centric and hub centric??
Often people buy aftermarket wheels with multi-fit bolt patterns and don't realize that the wheels are not compatible with the hubs. This happends to VW guys all the time, non hub-centric wheels work the wheel bolts loose and they end up losing the wheels.
There appears to be no problem with the hub on the car. I do not blame the dealer for not covering it, the problem was most definitely caused by your aftermarket wheels or an improper tightening of the wheel lug nuts.

Too much over 100ft lbs, and you can warp your brake rotor, then start a thread, brake peddle pulsing when slowing down at high speeds. Not ABS... lol
Or damage the studs...
But ya, ive had people cross thread lugs on studs before, it sucks...
My brother had Al rims on his S-10, and didn't know they needed the 100 mile (or less) retorque..
He was only 25 miles on them, when a wheel fell off...
Ever sicne then anytime I take my wheels off, always, do a 20 - 50 mile retorque...
and I even baught a torque wrench....
Or damage the studs...

Far too many people who are certified to work on vehicles have a hell of a time properly torquing down lugs. It's ridiculous tbh and this is the result in far too many cases.
