MAF problems

Ever since I have had my car I have had MAF problems. I had it replaced a while ago and it seemed fine for about 2 months but ever since ive had problems with it. Sometimes my boost is messed up and will give me boost then stop and then give me boost and stop. My rpm's sometimes will idle in neutral at about 1500 and 1000 and the needle will keep moving up and down and i have no idea what is happening. My exhaust will backfire a lot more than usual when this is happening. I have also had the CEL go on and off multiple times and every time I check it out it still says P0106 or whatever the MAF code is. I wanted to try and fix it but its so cold where I live in the Winter that I cannot explore what is happening enough. I took it to a shop but they did not really help. They just said I needed to replace it again. I'm kind of a noob so I need help finding the issue. My engine bay was pretty dirty when I bought the car. Could a dirty MAF be the problem? It's just weird because sometimes the car runs fine and other times I feel like I'll barely make it to where Im going haha. Please help someone
