may need a new valve cover/ 200 fix at dealer

Ok, so I was changing my spark plugs last weekend, **** hit the fan. All the coil bolts for the spark plug came off fine except one. It was rather tight, but once I had it turning slowly, it snapped!!!! So I took it to the dealer today and the guy said it may be a 200 fix, w/o tax of course. The damn piece of bolt is in there good. My problem is, it sounds like a 10-30 min fix.....and 200 for that is freaking outrageous. Should I just ask around to figure out better pricing or get a whole new valve cover? Or any better advice?

PM Mongorat427. See if he has a valve cover and bolt in stock. Cost you a lot less.

Nope, can't get to it since I tried getting it out. Only way now is to use a drill bit called ez out. Problem is, no one in the area carries the damn thing....

It's actually called an extractor and I've never seen a harbor tools that doesn't have one, and most auto parts stores have them too. Autozone, O'Reilly's, NAPA, they all have them. Sears? Yup.

Yea, I got one from autozone. Made by irwin. I tried it out and couldn't get straight on it. May have stripped the threading...

Also, can I still drive my car right now?

I would consider it, but wouldn't match the color scheme for the care. Thanks for the quick reply tho.

If you drive it you risk it wiggling a little loose and causing misfires. I wouldn't go too far but if you have to get it to a mechanic or a parts store it should be ok.

do what you can to get it out. if you have to drill that would be fine. that bolt doesn't have much pressure on it, its just holding a coil pack in there. if you can drill it and heli-coil it, you will be fine.

oh and btw.... 200 is a fair price... a new cover and lines is about a 100 bucks dealership price and about an hour of labor to install it and an average mechanic rate of 90 to 100 an hour.

Drill tiny hole. Reverse thread it. Bottom out a reverse threaded bolt, heat, profit.

I would love to see the spark plug and coil come out of that position. I doubt the bolt hold much pressure at all on the pack.

Pull the valve cover off and try seeing if some of the bolt is sticking out. The torque spec is 89 inch/lbs so it shouldn't be hard to spin out...... otherwise drill a hole and use an easy out. I had to do that for a guy once
