My engine's making a nasty knocking sound. Any ideas?
Hey guys, had my engine rebuilt a thousand miles or so ago, and now it's making this really nasty knocking/slapping sound. It does it when I start it up after it's been sitting awhile, then it goes away after about 5 minutes and starts sounding normal. Ugh.
Does anyone have any idea what's causing this sound, what it means, and what I should do about it? Thanks.
It sounds super unhealthy...

I don't know if I would describe it as a chain sound, but I'm having trouble imagining what a chain would sound like.
I have been having a CEL issue related to timing though. The shop that rebuilt it couldn't get the CEL to go away, I don't remember the exact code but it's something related to timing. The shop told me to go to the dealer, which I have yet to get around to doing.

IMO if a shop caused the timing issue they should research it and fix it. and honestly I think thats the timing chain being loose. maybe a more knowledgeable member will chime in and confirm.

Just FYI: the best point in the video to hear the sound I'm talking about might be in the second video, 18 seconds in. I walk to the back of the car, and the noise in question seems more audible without the rest of the engine noise. It sounds like a clicking or slapping type noise.

to me the front sounds just like the timing chain **** on you. I never listened to the back end of my car at that time. but its an easy and rather cheap fix as well. CED carries the new one and its simple to install.

sounds like a stuck valve.....
heard of valve seals gumming up and causing a valve to stick till it warms up a bit.
if it were a chain then it would never go away. Plus your exhaust note sounds like it has a bit of blow by.
This may even throw a timing code, but the going away part really makes me think less chain and more valve....
