What years your car? I had this same exact problem turns out it was some safety thing that breaks and there was a recall on it! Hopefully you have the same problem I did and they should fix it for free!

its an auto i assume. pop off the center consol (the part with the cup holder),get on the passenger side and look below the shifter assemble, there is a metal bar. push it up and that should release the key
that would release the cylinder not the key
that would release the cylinder not the key

i have the same problem sometimes too but i found that if i just turn the ignition a tiny bit it will let it out.
maybe its the start of the problem.
nothing but problems with my car. it was laid up for a week with electrical problems dealing with a broken solder in the fuse box.
now this and the steering column.

well all is taken care of,gm called me today and they paided for the repair.new shifter is in and a few things learned,i found out about the trunk release button which i never seen, lol.i must have looked at that lil door and million times and never opened it.until today well lets see what breaks next on thi car?
also if anyone else runs into a shifter problem and the dealer tells you NO.call the chevy number on the gm web site.thats all i did and they took care of it.it must be a bigger problem then we think if they are willing to fix it for free.like almost a recall i bet my dealer told me he has either sold and replaced almost 300 shifters alone in the past year.so it has to be a huge problem.
thanks for the help guys

hahaaha, I still have this problem. Yet to fix it. About where the ignition key is but underneath there is a 1" x 1" plastic piece that comes out and you put your finger in their and there's a button to the left you press & turn the key.
