Service manual says to give a sharp smack down on the timing chain guide/chain with something soft tipped (rubber, plastic, etc) to unlock the tensioner from its fully compressed state. It needs to compress 2mm iirc. When I did my brother's, I just wrapped a rag around the tip of my prybar.

PM Powell Racing Parts on here for a direct answer. From what I've read you do NOT need to smack the newer revised tensioner. That was the process for the original tensioner design.
