Oil Life Monitor

Is the oil life monitor an actual measurement of how much oil is in the engine or is it just an estimation of when to get your oil changed based on the amount of miles that you drive?

It's just a suggested guide based on time and driving conditions. I don't remember what the Cobalt is set to, but I know a lot of manufactures make theirs anywhere from 5-10k miles, 7500 being most common.

Since 2006 I have never used the life monitor. I change oil roughly every 3k. I tested it to see how long it took the monitor to get to 0. I did 4 oil changes before it finally go to 0% so it would have been over 12k miles.
