Unhappy P0340, P0341, P0017 with starting issues..

P0017 crankshaft position , camshaft position correlation (bank 1 sensor B)
P0171 system too lean (bank 1)
P0340 camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction
P0341 camshaft position sensor circuit range/performance
2006 cobalt SS LSJ

Ok, so I've had these problems for a long while now. P0017 popps up like every week or so, but the others come and go every 1-3 months. P0017 comes on mostly while driving , but p0340 & p0341 only pop up when I start the car. Sometimes I have to crank it 2-3 times to start the car. P0171 pops up randomly. I repeat. This comes and goes , but when it comes it lasts a few days. Very weird. Could this be the sensor? Or timing? My car doesn't die while driving and drives normal for the most part other than wasting lots of gas. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried "re-clocking" the cam position sensor? There's a good write up on here and it's really super easy to do. When was timing chain/tensioner done last? ... any rattle noise or extra noise from the valve cover/front cover area? Though with the codes would lean more to the sensor being bad

I'll edit this if I find the cam position sensor write up. Wah-bam Link! (One way to find tdc compression stroke on #4 is if you have a compression tester put it on #4 don't attach the meter and hand crank it till it's pushing air then slowly rotate till you feel it hit the top, no removing the valve cover this way) If that sets ok and you still get the error it's a cheap sensor under $40 USD if you shop around.

I haven't messed with the sensor yet because I don't know where it's at and I don't know how to do the "relearn" myself lol
I do get a little rattle noise while accelerating. Nothing serious, but I can hear it. Thanks for the reply

Here's a pic of it, it's on the back of the exhaust cam. At the cost of the part and considering the housing is hex interface there's not much chance it skipping timing (we have pistons that interface with intake valves if timing is really off). Timing slipping slightly and the poor mileage would probably come down to more-so timing chain stretch and tensioner not working optimally. Timing chain/tensioner and guides/bolts are a 100k km change or 70k?

Thanks man, I'll have to check that out this weekend. I bought a tensioner like 4 years ago , but I never installed it because I was scared of messing up my car ... I need to look for it though. It's probably time to replace it.. My question is, can the sensor be replaced by myself or do I have to get it done at the dealer because of the "relearn"?

There was a revision to the tensioners at some point here's a pic for comparison the clean one being the newer style probably best to make sure that's the type you have. It's pretty simple to change but will require the valve cover to come off so might want a spare gasket (I've never had one break coming off any of my cars), the tensioner itself its at the back of the head pretty much directly under the exhaust cam cog more pic for that. The tensioner you are putting in will come in a unsprung state (if it's the new style) and will need to be "activated" once installed pretty much smacking the interface end and it will pop out to the guide, you'll want a Haynes manual or a copy of the LSJ build book for specifics (torque value/pattern for valve cover and tensioner. Let me know if you need a copy of the build book or might be able to scan or take pic of the Haynes pages (worth the $18). Link to CSS write up on this in post below.

As for the sensor it's a plug and play type situation where it's the housing that's "clocked" to the cam shaft, in the housing is a small rotor with a number of notches and the sensor reads this when it passes. Would just be a matter of clearing some space disconnect the old sensor (1 bolt/connector) install the new one (89 in/lb) and reconnect.

Yea, I know where the tensioner is . I'm just scared of messing up lol I took it to a mechanic once and looked at me like I was high on drugs or something and told me he couldn't hear anything wrong lol so I've been driving it with the small rattle noise for like 2 years, but I will have to do it someday. And I have a brand new gasket and a revised tensioner , just that I don't know where it's at lol we moved and put some things in storage and brought some to the house.. And I haven't seen any of those parts here so I'm guessing they're at the storage. I also need a good wrench so I can read how many lbs I'm using , but I'm broke AF at the moment because I haven't worked for a year and a half thanks to an accident , so I guess I'll have to ask someone for one lol

I found the problem, it was my cam. Inside de cam where the sensor connects it was suppose to be static it was moving like crazy. This were cop cams and put in the oem cams and problem fixed
