Power Steering Failure
For a while my power steering was randomly cutting out. Now it pretty much don't work all together. When I start the car, it last a couple minutes and then it's gone and says "Power Steering" on the dash. Anybody have any idea how much it would cost to get it fixed? I don't have a warranty on it anymore so it has to be paid out of pocket.

First make sure it's not just a simple loose connection. Reach up under the dash and you'll feel the electric motor that powers the steering rack. Check the connections on it. It's not uncommon for stuff to get jostled under there.

yeh the tsb says to check wiring first, and replace the PS control module wiring harness. And if that doesnt fix the problem, then you need to replace the Steering Column itself.
but, unfortunately, the wiring harness thing is bs. You see, the steering column is an assembly with the pump and ps control module and everything intact. Its actually the control module thats failing.
As far as price is concerned, dealer list on the column is about $549 when i had to do the repair (couple months ago) and the labor time is 1.8 hours. Take into account your dealer's labor rate (prob $100+ an hour) and theres your cost. They may tack on a diagnostic fee as well.
The problem will get worse, it will get to the point where the PS will fail within seconds after starting. And it will get there fast.. just fyi.

Just developed the same problem myself, took the car to the dealer thinking it was still under warranty (bought it used with a 90 warranty). They quoted me 750 parts and labor, and the $550 part won't be in till this friday.

My wife's just literally got fixed yesterday. (She has an 05 LS)
If you have to pay for it, look on ebay. Your lookin at approx $100-$250 for a replacement vs $600+ from the stealership.

This isn't a hard project to do yourself.
I replaced just the power steering section of my column a couple weeks ago. Find a cobalt at a salvage yard, get the whole column (i spent 100 bucks on one) and fix it. I kept my column and steering wheel, and only replaced the portion that houses the power steering module and motor. I think it was a grand total of 10 bolts to remove for the whole project?

Ya. Hers went out.
They said they could cover it under warranty...but couldnt get her car in until a week or so.
So after some major ass kissing....they let me have the part.
Took me 30min max.
