It takes 1 to 2 days for the exhaust to break in. In that period, you get white smoke and it smells strange. That goes with all new aftermarket exhausts. (at least i think) I had a weird smell when I put my magnaflow on. It's just the muffler breaking in. It should go away within a day and if it doesn't, it's probably something else.

Hey I am new to the Cobaltss.net I have a question and I was wondering if anybody has any imput? I just bought a 2005 Cobalt SS/SC and the car only has about 7500 miles it is like brand new. Everytime I step on it I get a burning smell and I only have the factory exyhaust. Any ideas on what is or what to do?

Okay thanks I will let the dealer know about this. It is strange because I have low miles but I will take your advice and have it checked out. I think my warranty will cover this. I also have a GM Certified warranty along with the factory one.

Yeah a couple of members on here were smelling something like you have been smelling. They didn't have many miles on their cars either. They took it into the dealership and it turns out the cat was either clogged or something was wrong with it. The dealer should replace it under warranty for you so no worries.

I picked my SS/SC up on tuesday, and drove it across town for about half an hour. It had the heater on and noticed a burning smell. It went away when I switched the air off. I smelt it when I got home that day once I stepped out of the car. So I was out tonight again (wednesday) and it did the smell thing again, but not as bad. I can't see smoke or anything, so I thought is was just something involving the car being brand-new. Nothing seems to be wrong around the engine bay or exhaust manifold. It had 10 kms on it when I took it off the lot, and it has about 90 kms now.
So am I right to assume that this is just the exhaust and that it will go away in a few days, or should I call my dealers service department? I think if it is still noticeable in a few days, I will get it checked out.
Thanks!

Loving this car. It is as much fun as the '04 Z06 I drove. In fact, so far, I like it better!
