Shifter wont leave neutral PLEASE HELP!!
I drive an 06 Cobalt SS/SC and i was driving yesterday and i went to shift into second and nothing happened! I pulled over and my Shifter felt funny, it wouldn't spring back into neurtral like it should. It just stays where every you place it and the car stays in neutral no matter what gear i put it in!! I don't even need to use the clutch to move it around. I took it to a repair shop and they said something came apart and want 900 just to take the tranny out so they can see whats wrong. I had my clutch replaced a year ago. Any ideas anyone??

Thanks everyone. It was an independent shop. Turns out it was some plastic piece instide my gearbox that is a common failing part. So i need a whole new gear box (300). Atleast i took it to my dads friend and didn't have to take out the transmission like the first people told me.

A plastic piece inside the gearbox failed? And he knows that without taking the trans out? I'm a bit skeptical. As Mr. Powell said in post #4... I'd start looking there. 99% of the time, its one of those two things. The roll pins are what hold the shift levers on top of the transmission in place. Check the roll pins first. After those have been insured to be in place and operational, you check the linkage.
I've never heard of a plastic piece inside the transmission that is highly prone to failure.

Plus, $300 for a new gearbox??? Don't think so, $2k I would believe
Guessing it was something in the shifter that let go, 3 bills to supply / install a shifter sounds about right.....
