Shifting into gears often difficult

Running into a new problem. This problem seems to be getting worse and worse. Originally it was occasionally tricky shifting into 5th gear. Now it has spread to 1st and sometimes others. It's now either difficult shifting into 1st or it seems likes it's in gear...then as soon as I let out on the clutch, the shifter pops out and the engine gently revs as though it was in neutral the entire time. Reverse gear seems to work well consistently so far. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Scott

Edit: have a 2005 Cobalt SS/SC

Edit: I'm now sitting on the side of the road. Shifter moves freely without the use of the clutch...can't get into gear, obviously. Fun times
