Shitty american made oil filters

This is a picture of 2 different filters. Both are straight from the dealer. The parts manager told me that they often vary where they are made.

On the left, made in Bulgaria. On the right, USA. I have no clue what happened to it. I have not done anything different since I have owned the car, as far as oil changes go.

What is to blame for this?.. The shitty filter or is something wrong? Also, I know that it may appear to be ripped, but it is not, the little fins are just all out of whack.

Looks like the filter wasn't snapped into the cap before it was screwed into the block... so it was crushed when the cap was tightened down

It was, I always make sure that is seated correctly. It went in perfectly and came out like this.

Wow... even Fram filters don't crush that badly. Possibly just a defective one. Usually AC Delco, Wix, Hengst, and Napa Gold hold up very well.

This ACDelco, it's OEM.

Yes, origin where they are made often varies, as does the design, it also changes ever so slightly. Yes, it is the correct part, though. 100% guaranteed, because I just changed my oil today and it was another american made filter.

I think part of the problem is that American's in general don't seem to put any pride in their work anymore. Most americans just want to sit arround and collect a heavy paycheck. This results in poor craftsmanship. Granted its not ALL Americans

That is true. Actually, when I changed my buddy's oil on his G5, as a favor, last summer, his filter looked exactly like that. It must be the filter. At least it didn't rip..

They gave me another american filter yesterday at the dealership, so if it happens again, I'm blaming the filter.

OP, I had that happen to the Bosch version of our oil filter once, but never with the AC Delco version.

If you do some looking, you'll see that this has been occurring with Ecotecs for quite some time. I recall that originally people were blaming it on certain brands and recommending using only AC Delco filters. It looks like it was compressed and is now shorter than the filter it's next to. If that's the case, then the element being cut to the wrong length at the factory wouldn't be the cause. Another possibility is the filter cap being overtightened, but I don't think you could go tight enough to compress it that far. Perhaps it collapsed from oil pressure. It seems like this has occurred with most of the filter brands. There is only a handful of factories that actually make oil filters anyways, so many of them are probably coming from the same place.

Yeah, I don't think it was over tightened.. You would hear it crunch, no? I would guess oil pressure, if I had to say. It's the first time it's ever happened to me though, and I always use ACDelco, nothing else.

Ive had the same issue with napa golds and switched back to oem and never had a problem.
I think it might be from the O-ring sticking in the bottom of the holder and the filter twisting from removal.

Make sure you put some oil on the O-ring before installing ,it may help.

NAPA Gold filters are actually Wix. So it's starting to look like it is caused by something other than filter quality. Considering people have experienced it with what are considered the highest quality filters. The filter getting twisted is another possibility.
