I'm getting really frustrated with my damn shift knob falling off! Is this happening with anyone else with ss/sc? I won't even be doing anything but shifting regular and it just pops off when I go from 1st to 2nd. I put it back on and give it a twist (pretty hard twist) and it'll be good for a little, then back off again. Any fixes besides an aftermarket shifter?

I don't think it's ever going to fall off again. I don't know why the factory didn't do something better with the design then just having it on there the way it is. Oh well.

Ok here is the deal, with the 2005 Cobalt SS the shift knob falling off is a common thing. So there is a TSB out for it. What they do is they use an adhesive (Something like a thread lock) and a self tapping nut to keep it in place, I believe. I just had my done and that is what the TSB said.

I would have had it replaced under warranty, but I would still have that crappy unthreaded knob and shifter and a good chance it would have fallen off again. The self tapping screw was an option I was thinking of doing, but threading the whole thing just worked out perfect and it was easy. Best part is I'll never have to worry about it falling off again.

I am not a fan of aftermarket short shifters. I don't know how they feel on these cars, but on every mustang and fbody I've ever been in they felt so notchy and crappy. I love the sloppy shifts of stock shifters Plus, I'm on a super budget and didn't feel like dropping over $100 on something I could easily fix myself.

if its the top of the know the clips break off but if the whole knob is off and u see the spring and **** theres a screw missing under the little shift patter plastic piece so just get a screw that fits and tighten

Huh? I'm sorry but I can't really understand what you just said. I'm guessing you are saying that there is a hole under the shift pattern piece for a screw?? I put that hole there so there is nothing for the screw to go into.

Frustrated with shifter knob!
You know what's even funnier is my shifter knob pops off when I am not even driving it. I will come out to my car and find the knob sitting in the console upside down, I will jam it back on and pull on it as hard as I can and it does not come off. Then I drive it all day with no problems. However, when I go back out to my car there the shifter knob is again, in the console! LOL. It very rarely comes off when I am driving. Any suggestions?

Well I think my shifter knob is coming off because I can feel this sort of poping when I shift through gears and today when I got home and was in neutral I held the shaft and pulled up and down on the knob .Do you guys think that it will come off soon. I think it's time to take it into the dealership again. More warranty work. hopefully they don't look under the hood. and yes I know it sounded sick what I was talking about but hey thats what I did . hahhah

Before my shifter knob starting coming off it got loose so I could pull it up and down just like you BcobaltSS. It will just get worse and worse and eventually it will fall off all the time. I kept taking mine in to the dealership everytime it would fall off and finally they replaced the entire shifter assembly. I haven't had the problem since.

The dealer fixed mine once "kinda" and it stayed on for a very long time. Then ironically, my car was at the dealer for a week while waiting for my new PZero's and the day I picked it up the knob came off! Go figure! Anyways, the dealer ordered an entire new assembly and has been ok for the past 6 months.
