Ticking Noise parked; Car off

06 2.4 SS Automatic (4700 miles on it, bought brand new in July)

After the car gets driven, it has a nice ticking noise when we park it in the garage (or anywhere). My first thought was the exhaust, but its not like a typical or normal exhaust tick from being hot. It starts out when you first turn the car off tickin about 3-4 times A SECOND... then exponentially goes down to 1 tick every second, then 1 every 1.5; 2; etc... All in all.. i'd say it gets down to 1 tick every 2 seconds before the ticks start going down in volume, but not frequency. It sounds like its coming right dead center of the car, probably centered right behind the front wheels.

No Check engine lamps. No performance problems. Still getting 28+ MPG.

Thats why i really havnt said much- because its more of a cosmetic flaw and something thats annoying. Working at a chevy dealership, i really despise people who come in for wind noises- MULTIPLE TIMES. Yeah its annoying, but its a chevy for crying out loud. I'd understand on a CADILLAC... but not a 10,000 used car with the remainder of a factory 36 mile warranty.

the only problem is- it was doing this ticking before i welded on the muffler... and im pretty sure GM warranty isnt gonna wanna order me a new downpipe/manifold/rear section if theres a big ole muffler on it.

As i said, it was doing this the day i got it from the dealership. I was so pissed at the dealership though cause my wheels were scuffed to hell (which, they paid to get refinished, which came out like ****, so then they bought me new ones)- mainly i was mad because the car was out of service for 3 weeks waiting on **** to come in. Even though i WORK there, i just dont want to see the car out of service for another half month just to find out GM wont warranty it.

hi new here, i just got my 06 ss 2.4l 4 weeks ago.. yeah mine has done it since i bought it too.. but it is just the exaust.. the reason the ticking slows down because the exaust is slowly cooling. i admit ive never had a car that done that noise before, it must be something to do with the metal they used for the exaust..

Wow !!! I was just going to post about this. My 07 with 800 miles on it does that too. I hope the GMPP catback will eliminate it.

It's just the exhaust system cooling... whether you think it is or not. All stock Cobalts do it to some degree. Any aftermarket cat-back should solve the problem.

Mine did it too... and I haven't noticed it since I put on my GMPP performance Cat-back. So If you don't like it... Buy the GMPP Catback. Problem solved.

This is completely normal since the exhaust is new. It’s not only with cobalt, it’s with almost all new cars. Some do it for just a bit while others do it for several thousand miles.

BDW, when I put my GMPP catback on, there was no more ticking coming from my exhaust.

Yes, we have answered this question hundreds of times before, and the search function will probably get him the answer much quicker, but that is no excuse for yelling at someone in all caps to do a search

the reason i posted about it, was i read all the forums about exhaust "clicking" but they all were while a car was running. I know exhaust TICKS are normal after a car has been ran-- i work on cars at a chevy dealership- but this one was very rapid paced and unlike any exhaust cool down i had ever heard before. I believe it though. Gm's way of saving a pretty penny on their so called "higher end" models. Just cant wait to see how fast this high quality exhaust will rott out ;-)

And as for the flaming, i'm used to it. J-body.org Veteran. i dont pay any attention to it.

The hangers are pretty cheap. My buddy took his stock one off after 30,000 miles and after looking at I can't say I have confidence it wouldn't have fallen off at 60,000. And that's not the only place they skimped......

... about 30-40 min north of you in the Poconos.

As far as the hostility quote, I got flamed for that too? It was NOT his rhetoric, it was the fact that he spends a lot of time *policing* the forums reminding us noobies to search. That is a hostile way to welcome people. Why should I be scared to ask a question in a forum I did search for? Is there a limit on threads per topic? What if I find a dead thread? What makes a repeat thread that bad compared to the rediculous SS/SC vs. SS/NA threads??? Not to mention the ever important what is rice debacle. Should we ask permission to post new threads? Should I have taken an online class in forum posting? I thought we had moderators to remind of us wrong doing. Wow, at 41 years old, I need a rite of passage into the forum world, I feel so dumb now.

I am not that upset, just felt like ranting. I cant be wrong for that, right ?

They say its the resonator. And once you go to an aftermarket exhaust it goes away. I know my tick went away when I got my magnaflow catback.
