timing chain tensioner problem

Well, my wife was driving my car home from work and noticed a noise like "a fan" was on she told me about it. I went out to investigate. i started up the car. than noticed the noise. i opened the door and the noise was really intense. it was comming from the engine bay. at this time there was no egnine light so i decided to ride it to the chevy dealer around the corner as soon as a got on the main street the engine light came on. So i coasted it in the dealership parked it, than shut it off. this was less than 10 hours until we were going on vacation. Told the dealer what happened and well we had to take the truck to the airport.
found out when i came back that the tensioner broke. They replaced that and the timing chain and its good know. Has this happened to anyone??

oh and by the way i have a 2007 2.0 stg 2

The tensioners aren't the greatest design in the world, they do go bad sometimes. Seems like everything worked out well for you, they fixed it under warranty while you were on vacation. Doesn't get much better than that.

Generally, if its been replaced with the updated design, they don't go bad. You might have gotten a defective one from the factory or something, but thats why you have warranty

I have made a habit of always replacing them when i'm inside a motor for repair/rebuild work, as its just cheap insurance, but I personally have never had one fail.
