Transmission not engaging into gears...

I saw a post about the transmission not going into gear, and mine does the same. Just wanted to post a new post to find out if anybody else has had this problem and if so, what caused it. When shifting, it feels as if something is blocking either the shift linkage keeping it from engaging into gear. I am getting the trans flushed out at 30,000 miles as recommended to see if that helps any before I go in and say it wont shift and they blame it on bad driving, even though my tires have lasted me this long, 29,000 miles and still have 3 32nd's of an inch on them, so I think that cancels out the bad or aggressive driving. But if anybody else has had this problem, let me know what it was or what you suspect could be the problem. Thanks guys.

not to sound like a smart ass, but are you sure you have the clutch disengaged?

well my car had this same problem and it turned out to be a cheap part... apparently the shift selector pin had snapped in half and they tried telling me i abused the car, even after complaining about it two weeks earlier.

Mine does the same. I didn't start doing it til I got the trans in December after the stocker blew up. I have taken it in twice now and they say they can't duplicate the problem. I notice it is mostly when trying to shift nice and easy. Yes, it even happens when the clutch pedal is on the floor. (trust me I have tried everything in the last 7 months thinking it was just me being a crappy driver.) I find it the worst when shifting from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. Sometimes down shifting also. One time from 1st to 2nd, which almost got me t-boned by some ass trying to make the yellow light.

Positive it's nothing with the clutch. Which is why I posted this up, just to see what others have found out. I saw one with metal shavings in his and that was the culprit. I'm gonna wait till I get my transmission flushed and then go back if it still does it. And mine is worst going from 1st to 2nd and sometimes reverse. Thanks though guys.

And i like that color! Nice car man.

i had the same problem when i ran at the track last saterday, not yesterday but July 21st. I was psyced because i finally got into the 13's... ran a 13.7 on street tires ($85 kuhmos at that) then my second run, like a jackass i gave it too much gas and didnt let off after i started wheel hopping, then went to shift into 2nd and there was no gear, somehow made it into 3rd gear but after i slowed down i had no gears at all, i could push the shifter forward or backward and could wiggle it like i was in neutral. my friend that works at a saturn dealership says he has had a couple of redlines come in and it was the shifter pin that causes the same concern. but the dealership i had it towed to said mine was probably internal failure and that it looked like they were going to order a new tranny for it. I hope they give me a new tranny under warentee.

mine ended up being all gears, i still think it might be the shifter pin, but i'm not saying anything if i get a free trans out of it. i dont know how i got into 3rd if everything failed at once.

Funny thing about mine. It was smooth with my original trans, even after the internals failed and the case cracked. I drove it to the dealership whineing and spitting fluid all over the place, but every gear worked and it shifted perfectly. Now with a brand new trans installed by the dealership fights to go into gear and is very rachety.

Mine is usually from 1st to second and only really seems to happen when there is a lot of wheel spin and rpm's are over 6 grand. Now if the rpm's are over 6 grand but I do not have a lot of wheel spin it shifts fine. I still have not had the trans flushed out either cause the dealership doesn't keep my type of transmission fluid on stock. Cause it's some type of a synthetic fluidso they had to order it. Also something new that has developed with my car. When i start from a stop and get on the gas kinda hard from 1st(not causing tire spin) the car seems to hesitate before it goes. Almost like the blower isn't forcing any air into the engine or if there is boost lag or something. Anbody had this happen to them?

I posted before about my trans not going into 1st at a stop or intersection. It does feel like it is getting blocked. I took it to the dealer and they could not duplicate the problem I described to them. Now I usually hit 2nd then 1st when I am at a stop, or I let off the clutch and engage the clutch then move from neutral to 1st and that usually goes right in.

Also, what type of transmission gear oil are you guys going to change too? I was thinking of eventually switching to Mobil 1 gear oil.

every 5000 miles I go for a service and I run mobile 1 synthetic(dealer recommended) and I believe that the trans fluid is also some type of a synthetic also made by mobile 1. Which is what I have in mine currently.

I've only had issues going into reverse. I put it into 1st then back into reverse to engage it.

They'll always blame your car problems on driver abuse b/c of what you drive. I brought mine in for a few rattles and they blamed them on driver abuse.

Why did they even bother building a performance car if it can't withstand some abuse?

I baby the hell out of mine.

i got a new tranny out of it! and it turned out to be the shifter pin that caused my main concern. i feel like my new trans feels slightly more ratchety too. i had a bad thought before i went to bed a couple days later, what if they didnt put a tranny with a limited slip in? is there a big difference when driving one with or without?

a big difference in drive feel i mean, like more torque steer, b/c i really hope they gave me my G85 trans

hmm, I don't have much torque steer with mine and it has limited slip

and well, with limited slip you have more control over you steering wheel since both wheels go.......

I'd double check b/c it doesn't sound like they gave you one with an LSD

well my stock one had the limited slip and it doesnt feel noticabley different compared to the new one, i was wondereing if anyone who has a cobalt without limited slip, if they experience much torque steer. i just hope i got the limited slip i payed for in my original trans.

This literally just happened to me in my fiancé’s ss/sc, I’m hoping it’s the shifter pin as mentioned. We just replaced the clutch a few months ago, so I’m highly doubting it is that.*
