Transmission seal leaking oil
The first pic had oil where I circled, but I had cleaned it off by the time I thought to grab the camera. The oil seems to be coming out of the engine-transmission seam, and I'm 95% sure it's tranny oil, not engine oil. The car shifts fine, and I don't race it much, but I swapped in a used transmission from a rollover accident, and trans oil leaking out = no bueno.
Luckily the shop I got it done at has a labor warranty, so I'll be taking it back next week, but if anyone's seen this before I'd love to hear what it was. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure it's coming out of the front seal like you mentioned. That's what the second picture shows as well (coming out of a different seal though). I've been told the trans shop might have simply overfilled it, so I guess I'll try checking the level tomorrow and see where it's at.

So the transmission shop is telling me that the case and input shaft seals have likely gone bad, and to check the warranty from the place I got it from. The junkyard guy said he'd help, but he's never seen a transmission fail in this manner (it only had 16k on it). I called back the trans shop and they told me they would have had to ship it to some other transmission shop to dismantle it and put new seals in. They thought it was new and didn't realize the input shaft seal should have been replaced (no idea how they thought that since the slave cylinder was obviously used). This of course would have costed far more money and was not part of the seal replacement I was offered.
Figures, the one time I don't do something myself, this happens. I hate car shops.

That's what I thought at first too, but I'm pretty sure it's not engine oil. It's gear oil (doesn't smell like engine oil and it's a bit thicker).
On the plus side, if it IS the rear main seal, they definitely did replace that and it would be covered. It wouldn't explain the oil down by the drain plug though, as far as I can guess.

Just for reference - it was indeed a rear main seal that went out. ******* shop didn't install it when I asked the first time so I have to eat the cost. $500 after a nice discount, but still sucks.
The more you know.
