Weird noise

Helping a buddy with his LSJ. Car is completely bone stock. Just started making this noise a couple weeks ago. Car has 155k on it.

Any thoughts?

Have you checked out the timing chain at all?? On my old lsj we thought it was the timing chain that was noisy(kind of similar to that noise) but it wasn't and ended up being something in the bottom end

we had the valve cover off to replace the gasket and the chain looked solid.

I was thinking something in the bottom end too.

Does it do it with the serpentine belt removed?

Pull the inspection cover on the front of the head and see if the bolt backed out/broke off.

I think he's talking about the plate to the front, were the timing bolt breaks normally. Hard to explain without a picture, I can see it in my head. If you're working on it this weekend I'll swing by

It's that plug right by the tensioner pulley in your video, has a 10mm allen key hole in it. Pull it out and look for anything strange, a broken guide, or bolt snapped off, etc.

If you found a guide in his oil pan then its probably a broken guide. I would do a timing set. Mongo should have some low mile oem ones cheap.
