Who knows how to replace steering gear?

Anyone know how much is involved with replacing the steering gear on a s/c? Its driving me nuts but dont want to buy the gear at 300, and then need a column which is only 400. Any info is appreciated, im out of warranty and chevy wants $650... so I gotta figure something else out..

thanks!!!

coblasts thankyou for the PM you r the man

i had gm diagnose it, basically loose steering/ rattle while going straight and on bumpy roads. They pulled the steering fuse and it still did it, so the gears i believe are stripped. my endlinks and I shaft are good (n lubed)

Alignment should fix it up, just need to adjust the tie rods to get the wheel centered and the toe correct.

Took care of the clunking / slop?
