reverse in a 2.2 manual always has a toy car sound to it. is that what you're hearing?

I would say you need a belt or an alternator / powersteering or something man LOL not sure without hearing the noise and being their .... have some one else replicate the noise and you stand out side to figure out where its comming from

just might be the piece of metal on the break pad that tells you when the pads are low. Sometimes they get bent and rub against the rotor. You said that you can hear it in both reverse and forward...to about 15 mph.....that is what i would guess it to be...

Could be a strut or shock.

Just add it to the list of problems these cobalt have.

1. If it were a belt he should hear it all the time, not just mainly when in reverse.

2. The Cobalt does not have power steering.

I would guess it is the brakes, probably the rear brakes. My car does the same thing but mostly happens when I initially move the car in reverse. I think it has to do with the rear brakes not releasing quick enough when the parking brake has been taken off. My theory is that you park the car and apply the parking brake while the brakes are still hot. This causes the brakes to "stick" to the rotor (or drum if you have drum brakes). When you take the parking brake off and start moving the pads have to "unstick" and retract causing a bit of drag on the rotor or drum hence the noise you hear.

Its not power steering. It is electric assist steering. The two terms are not interchangeable.
