Semi-recall 07 ss/sc's (failure of the catalytic converter)

So Got home today with a little letter from GM canada stating=
(tried to get my scanner to work so i'm just gonna type it out)

Dear ..........:

As the owner of a 2007 model year chevrolet cobalt, equipped with a 2.0L 4-cylinder supercharged engine, your satisfaction with our product is very important to us.

This letter is intended to make you aware that some 2007 model year chevrolet cobalt vehicles, equipped with a 2.0L 4-cylinder supercharged engine, may have a condition where the malfunction indicator lamp illuminates, and/or there is a lack of engine power. This may be caused by failure of the catalytic converter.

Do not take your vehicle to your GM dealer as a result of this letter unless you believe that your vehicle has the condition as described above.

GM is providing owners with addition protection for the catalytic converter. If this condition occurs on your 2007 model year Chevrolet Cobalt, equipped with a 2.0L 4-cylinder supercharged engine, within 10 years of the date your vehicle was orinally placed in service or 193,000km, whichever occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge. Diagnosis or repair for conditions other than the condition described above is not covered under this special coverage program.

Repairs and adjustments qualifying under this special coverage must be performed by a GM dealer. You may want to call the service department at your dealer to find out how long they will need to have your vehicle so that you may schedule the appointment at a time that is convenient for you. This will also allow your dealer to order parts if they are not already in stock. Keep this letter with your other important glovebox literature for future reference.

If you have already paid to have this special coverage condition corrected and you have not received reimbursement under a Vehicle Service Contract, you should contact your dealer as you may be eligible to receive reimbursement. Please provide your dealer with your original paid receipts or invoices verifying the repair, the amount charged, proof of payment, the date of payment of those charges, and proof of ownership of the vehicle at the time of the repair. Reimbursement will be limited to the amout the repair would have cost if completed by an authorized GM dealer. Your request for reimbursement, including the information and documents mentioned above, must be received by your dealer before january 31, 2011.

We are sorry for any inconvenience you may experience; however we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.

General Motors of Canada Limited

I got the same letter yesterday for my 06. At 40K miles it runs like a top. I have the stage 2 on the car.
I wonder if it has to do with driving style? I rarely get to play, I mean drive it hard.
I also wonder if the factory tune is to blame, or maybe there were some faulty cats? I have seen cats where the core came loose and turned sidewys, effectively blocking the exh, but in these cars, the computer would know that right away from the 2nd O2 sensor. It's just very interesting, at least GM will fix it pretty much forever.

What malfunction light? I've been getting "the smell" from the exhaust and I don't want to get charged for the diagnostic if I don't need to get mine replaced.

well the factory tunes are fairly rich and same with the stage 2 tune as well. so that would definitely cause premature failure of the cat from running richer then it should. just my opinion

Explains why my engine temps are so low compared to my G5.

just got mine yesterday. Thankfully I got a magnaflow hi-flow cat on right now, so I'm good. Still, it would've been nice to find an excuse to put my stock muffler back on.

even the 2.2's and 2.4's have a fairly rich tune. thats why you can tune them up and get a few extra horses by not having it so rich

Got the letter as well for my 06.
Notice that the letter does not say that the converters are the problem, but that the car “may have a condition…"

The stock and stage 2 tunes are the problem here. I have stage 2 on my car and I am on my 3rd converter at 60,000 miles (both replacements covered under warranty.

I wanted to keep this car for a long time, but I have a feeling I won’t keep the car past 120,200 miles since I will probably be on my 6th converter by then

Thread title should be changed to recall ALL ss/sc's for this

i got the later, finally.

just some information about those you aren't sure.
this isn't a true recall, i guess you can say its a semi-recall.
chevy will only replace your cat-converter if you check engine light is on.
and of course, it has to be connected to it.

a buddy of mine works for a gm dealership, he looked it up for me. he printed something out, that i didnt really have a chance to thoroughly read over yet. but yea.

so
cel on= new cat for you.
