Hidden URL's

I was wondering if it was possible to hide URL's that members post from the general public. Such as hiding the ability for anyone that is not a member to not be able to view a URL that a member has posted with a text reading members only. I have a hosting account with lots of bandwidth but the issue I am running into is the fact that if I post a URL currently anyone can see it and travel to the hosting to just leach off the site. I reviewed my recent site statistics and found that within 24 hours I had over 12 gigs used up from a lowbandwidth file and over 140 gigs from a high bandwidth file. I want to keep hosting files so the members can enjoy them but with huge spikes from just 2 files I may only be able to host a few files at a time each month and that would suck.

Just a thought lemme know what you think admins

I was wondering about your bandwidth myself. Hiding them would be nice.

truth be told I do have alot but when calculated I would barely have enough to support the amount needed if I kept getting more hits at the rate they were coming in

Uh that would totally be useless, because most of the links that are posted on other forums are direct links, not links to the forum. If you don't want to spend the bandwidth don't share it.

never said I didn't want spend bandwidth just said I don't want to spend it on those that just leach off sites

edit: this is similar in practice to what many top companies do to reduce hot linking like the other day a dude posted a thread with a video link and the link lead to a page that said hot linking was not allowed then they were directed to the main page ... I don't think something that elaborate is needed just something simple

yes my point being ...the poll answers it self since its fairly obvious that members dont care if non members can see links ...becasue they are memebers it dosen't effect them

How do you figure that a cookie is going to stop someone from downloading a video? I download video's every day from sites I'm 'required' to have clearance for - but the direct link is there in the code, so what's the use?

this is only meant to prevent users that are none members from 'viewing' the URL's unless logged in with their user name ... if they don't know what the URL is they won't be able to view the link ... it's only meant as a casual prevention against leaching and obviously won't prevent some one from posting a direct link to the file or using another method to get the link but will reduce the amount of traffic to that one hosted site (where the link is directed for the movie) so that more bandwidth is saved for more videos for the cobaltss.net community.

your digging too deep into the situation as with time anything can happen to flood more traffic to the movie server I am just trying to buy time until that point at which time it would be up to me or anyone else hosting content for the community to update their files and the same process will be repeated except this time even less users will have access unless they feel like wasting time to find a movie that they had already seen

edit: once a block is put in on the server side it wont have to be updated at all so it would be a one time thing to add the script for the admins of this site

I am confused, are you talking about cobaltss.net or about your site? I really cant tell form your original post.

If you are talking about your site, I donno why your asking for mods/admins opinions?

If you are talking about cobaltss.net, we don’t care to spare bandwidth. Post links wherever you want

no no what I meant was that I was wondering if it was possible to run a script on the cobaltss.net site that would hide URL's posted in a thread just from people that were not yet members. This would stop leaching to a certain extent and woulnd't affect cobaltss.net members at all.

For instance:
person A has a membership and can view a URL that was posted in a thread.

person B does not have a membership and found the site looking for movies like he always does just to stream them. He searches the pictures and videos section and finds a thread named ss vs whatever video. He can see and read the thread but can't see what everyone is talking about which is the video. He looks for a link but only finds a message that says ' Become a member today to view this URL' and decides to leave.

person C does the same as person B but decides to become a member then watches the video and decides to post a view comments and in return others comment as well and person C ends up becoming a repeat visitor thus contributing to the community as well.
