Rear Rotor ?

I just went to the dealer and they told me I need new pads and possibly new rotors. Ive seen on other threads that some dealers will replace everything. Has anyone in the socal area had them replaced by the dealer and if so which dealer?

What year and how many miles are on the car? All my rear pads were waering down too fast but the driver side rear inboard finally wore down to the backing plate. All the rotors are torn up too. Right now none of the auto part stores will be able to sell you a rear rotor but the pads are easy to find as they were used on a lot of different cars (Saab 9-3, Volvo S40, etc.). Carquest is showing an '08+ SS-sepcific rear rotor in their system, but it's not available yet and may be a few weeks or longer.

I bought rear rotors and pads at NAPA

They had to special order them of course, and the pads were from a SAAB.

Here are the part numbers for what I ordered....

48880706 Rear Rotor $32.89 a piece

SS-7874A-M Brake Pads - Rear $59.99

They charged a freight charge since they had to have them shipped which was $5.99

Hope this helps

Just to verify, that was for an '08+ SS? Going off the username I'm assuming he's got one of the new cars with the braking issue and NAPA didn't have a ventilated rotor part number a few weeks ago when I last checked.

My car is a 08 ss/tc with 22k on the odo.

My bud 383 stroker and I were going to put pads on that I got at advance auto for what they said was quoeted part for my rear brakes, when we took the caliper off it was obvious that the pad I had wasn't correct for my car.

I took the pads back and they suggested I goto NAPA, I laughed to myself cuzz I never buy parts their but thought what the hell...

The matched my pad up to a 04 saab by pulling up a pic of the saab's pad and matching it up to mine...

The rotors and pads had to be ordered cuzz of course they didn't stock them...

The rotor is a OEM COBALT ROTOR part # 48880706 ($32.89 times 2)

The pad is a OEM SAAB PAD part# SS - 7874A - M ($59.99)

Dealership wanted $225 to put new pads on and turn my rotors....

Pictured here are the stock pads, The arms on the pad that hold it on the carrier are much diffrent than a ss/sc pad

My Left pad was at about 50% outboard and 5-10% inboard (*Also one side of this pad is higher than the other)

My Right pad was at about 50% outboard and no pad left with rivits grinding into the rotor.

Pads and rotors installed,

So by doing it myself I spent 140 on new pads and rotors and 10 bucks for supplies... 150 total with new pads and rotors instead of 225 for new pads and turned rotors that I'm sure wouldnt be able to turn but since they couldnt find them in stock just wanted to pad slap my car

I have a 09 SS and I have 19000 miles. The dealer told me they would charge me around 300 to turn the rotors and for new pads.

got mine replaced... rancho valley chevrolet... they had the GM master tech come in and approve the whole ordeal... it was kinda comical...

i even brought proof about all the other cars having problems...

however they didnt do it under warranty... they said it was a "good will gesture" on their part.

If you're having the problem where it's bad enough that the pads need replaced, they're more than likely not going to be able to turn/resurface the rotors. That means they'll probably get the car, tear it down, then tell you that you'll need to buy new rotors which will add a couple hundred bucks to that bill.

Overall way too expensive for the work involved. If you can remove a lug not from a wheel you can probably change the brake pads and rotors. The only "special" tool you'll need is an Allen-key socket (available from any place like Sears or even AutoZone) and a brake spreader or giant C-clamp to push the piston back into the caliper. I'll have to check the NAPA out here to see if they can get those rotors posted above, but if that's the case and you don't want to do the work yourself the cheapest bet is probably going to be finding another mechanic or brake shop and supplying your own pads and rotors.

With that low of a mileage you may want to try the dealer you bought the car from , if it's different from this one, and if they don't want to help keep trying a couple other dealers and see if one will look at it. If you're calm and nice and ask them to explain how the inside of the rear pads could go out so soon when the rear doesn't doing a significant part of the braking and ask if a caliper defect or parking brake issue could cause it, maybe one will help cover it. if you can't get one to help under warranty, the dealer would be the last place I'd have a brake job done as they're going to be way more expensive than nearly anywhere else.
