Thanks. Read back a few pages and saw what happened to your car. At least you have an excuse to upgrade now. Nothing like a big(er) turbo.
By the letter of the law, if you still fall under the factory emissions warranty you are required to have an OEM cat on the car, which if you've bothered to price is probably a touch expensive (especially if you've modified the car and the manufacturer won't cover the replacement cost). Now for older cars that don't fall under this the Air Resource Board requires special OBD-II certified catalytic converters that are approved for sale and use in California and certified specifically for your vehicle. These are also generally more expensive than replacement cats you can buy elsewhere in order to cover the certification costs.
Having a stock/OEM cat would primarily come into play if you were sent to the state referee for a formal inspection. If you installed an aftermarket high-flow cat and your exhaust and other modifications didn't draw too much unwanted attention from the smog station, you'd probably be able to find a place that will test and pass the car as long as it passes the test.
Either way I'd definitely hang onto a stock cat for anyone taking theirs off to upgrade. And if you need a stock one you'd probably be best off hunting a used low mileage one down from someone in another part of the country that doesn't have emission testing.
And good luck trying to give the ARB the finger. Sure, you can try it, but they'll probably take your car, cut the roof off and turn it into a garden planter for some endangered shrub brush.
Funny you should ask. I'm probably going to be selling it soon with a couple other cars, but judging by your current location you'd be much better off finding something closer. I'd say you should be able to find a really clean one in the $1.5-2k range with one needing some work for less. I've always wanted to pick up a 5-speed or do the conversion to mine, but for drag racing the slushbox is actually pretty nice for consistency.
