Thinking of moving to SoCal

Thinking of moving to SoCal
What are some good and bad things about life there. Especially in and around the San Diego area.
I'm not taking this lightly. I really think I need to get out of Utah. There is nothing left for me here. I came here for a job, and now the job is gone. (I had trouble getting a clearance due to bad credit..)
I am an electronics maintainer. I repair and troubleshoot all kinds of electronics. It's easy work for me and I am good at it. I'm even good at training other people to see what I see and be good troubleshooters too, so I could make a good lead tech. I am specialized in radar, but I can learn to maintain pretty much anything.
I need help finding a job(So far, I've been looking mostly at San Diego and surrounding...). I have a resume. It's a good resume. It's pretty technical in nature, but it clarifies what I've done a bit better for people who like reading that sort of thing. PM me if you'd like to see it.
I also would like to know, from people who live in the area, if it is genuinely better for an electronics technician, a nanny, and a baby (myself, my wife, and a baby) because there seems to be nowhere here in Utah that I can earn a living.
We are an interracial couple. Anyone see potential problems with that? Are there places away from which we should stay?
Ok. I'm going to stop talking now. I have more questions, but I think it would be stupid to ask them all now.
Ok. One more. I'll probably be bringing the Cobalt. It's modded, but all the parts are Utah legal. Is the San Diego area pretty strict about mods?
Last one, really:
Is there any other city in CA that you could recommend besides the San Diego area that would be a good fit for an Electronics/radar technician and a Nanny? So that we can work and live in peace?
Sorry for the long post.

Having lived in San Diego most of my life, I will say it is really expensive compared to other areas. I live about an hour away and the house I just bout was half the price of one in San Diego. As far as jobs right now, its kind of rough because there are lost of people looking but very little hiring. I don't know about your field much really but its always worth a shot.

Yeah. I have been sending my resume to jobs out there. Just kind of waiting for responses. We're setting up a sale at a swap meet so we don't have to take so much junk with us. We're still not sure though, because San Diego is a pretty damn expensive place. We pay $695 a month for a 1100Sf duplex. It seems to be about double that price for the same size place in SD. That's what is making us waver quite a bit. If not for the prices of apartments and rental houses, we'd probably almost already be there.
I am also waiting for some money that I'm expecting late August/early September. That should enable us to move.
But seriously, anyone know where I can get a place for under $1000? preferably under $800. I have searched CL, Rent.com....Can't really find anything cheap enough.

There isnt anything cheap dude. It sucks out here. I just moved to a cheaper area north of San Diego and closer to work. And even though its less expensive they are still getting $1 per square foot in homes for rent, and condos are getting about $1.50 a square foot. In San Diego you would more likely be looking at at least $2 per square foot for a condo at a minimum. Houses are about the same. You might want to look into moving to Temecula. It's cheaper and its like a 40 minute drive to San Diego.

So. I am officially in LA area. I have enrolled at DeVry in electronics engineering. Will be getting Post 9/11 GI bill and BAH. Still trying to find work though. My family and I are currently staying with my best friend, but he's all the way out in Rosamond. Who's got a couch we can use for a few days?
