Rotor Comparison: OTTP Hardcore vs. SS/TC

Ive gotten a few emails and pms from people wondering about the OTTP Hardcore Brake upgrade kit and the SS/TC Brembos and which one was "better". There are several key differences which have been mentioned at least once before but apparently it bears its own discussion.

The SS/TC stuff has great "bling" factor, it works, its a direct bolt-on, its got the Brembo logo on it, it has the benfits that come with a fixed multipiston caliper, less expensive rotor replacement It doesnt fit many wheels, bleeding is required, at the current time there is limited pad choice, parts are only available from GM at this time, shorter rotor life

The OTTP kit has a great race look, they work, its a direct bolton with no bleeding required, has the same tried and true caliper as stock, fits virtually all wheels, excellent caliper/pad serviceability at virtually any parts store, longer rotor life. no "bling" factor, caliper heavier than Brembo, higher rotor replacement cost..

The TC rotor is a blank 315mm diameter, 26mm thick, 40 straight vane rotor, that weighs just over 20lbs.

The OTTP rotor assembly is a dimpled 311mm diameter 28mm thick, 48 directional vane rotor that weighs just over 16.5lbs

Caliper comparison:

LE5/LSJ caliper, ~12 1/4lbs fully loaded:

LNF/Brembo caliper, ~9 1/2lbs fully loaded.

So.......the full OTTP Hardcore front brake upgrade is about 3/4lb LIGHTER than the SS/TC Brembo setup, when combined with what should be an awesome price(cheaper than TC brakes?????) and none of the wheel fitment issues it should be a no-brainer to go Hardcore over Brembo.

Thank You for this information.
The weight difference might be a help when added to a set of OZ wheels.

Any idea of the cost ???????

WELL under $1000, possibly less than any other BBK on the market.

Of course there is, I dont have much info on an SS/TC rotor upgrade to share other than it is being researched as we speak and will be American/Canadian made product when its released, very nice stuff just like these.

anything using a stock caliper is not an "upgrade"

Keep telling yourself that Rod.

This has been discussed at length numerous times, its a larger higher quality rotor.

So are you telling me that when I switched from my stock LS 256mm x24mm front brakes to SS 296mm x 26mm front brakes it wasnt an upgrade? Or that somehow going from the SS 296x26s to these 311mm x 28mm rotors that also wasnt an upgrade? oooooooookaaaaaaay.

Ill be sure to tell Georgian Bay Motorsports(Koni Challenge Champions) they are doing it wrong when i see them, i am sure they will be super happy to know they can save money by switching back to stock rotors since this isnt really an upgrade because it doesnt use an aftermarket caliper.

Or perhaps you should just come out to NJMP on May 2nd and point and laugh, it might make you feel better.

You'd need more than that kit to slow you down after a nice mid 14 sec run on your sub 300hp tvs balt for sure

Thats a pretty bold statement. Got anything to back it up?

Care to explain how you came to that conclusion?

Or perhaps youd be so kind as to explain why more racers dont use it if it really outperforms "all of them"?

Or why GM didnt just spec that stuff on the TC?.....its not like they havent used that style caliper for 10years or anything.

Cost is the big thing, no car company OEM is going to provide killer brakes unless its a 40k plus car. Theres no way GM is going to put a 1000+ brake kiit on a 20k car. SS badges or not.

You can put whatever rotors you want on bigger brakes perform better thats just physics if what your saying is true ZR1 vettes would be using only 12 inch brakes too.

Cost is an issue to race teams also, and they have rules to follow as well

Um...I dont think Baer Cobalt brakes qualify as "killer" they are basically just C5 front brakes......Its a 13" one piece rotor, and a Baer/PBR aluminum pad guided caliper.....JUST like what GM has used on the everything from the Vette to the Camaro to the GrandAm for the last decade and a half.!!!! No way theyd put $1000 brakes on a Balt.....hmmmm maybe we should tell them somebody f'd up and that there are brembos on the front of the TC.....

OHHHHHHH now were using physics? Then how exactly is it that a rotor that is 15mm larger in diameter and 2mm wider than stock, with improved ventilation and more mass in the swept area isnt an upgrade.

Youre right cost IS an issue, and if the rotor being discussed here werent an upgrade over stock there is no way they would run it. And if an over the counter commercially available product was that good its highly unlikely they would take the time to develop a bespoke braking solution as they did.

I am not saying that Baer kit isnt an upgrade over stock, it is. But its not as capable as I feel you think it is. You really need to do some more research into what happens to those snazzy floating aluminum calipers under heavy loads.....its not pretty.

I must agree with Maven as my brother has raced various touring cars for years and I am sorry I have not seen any with baer brakes, they are all AP, Brembo, wilwood or stop tech calipers. I also know a couple of corevette guys and one of the first upgrades they did to there z06 was a brembo fixed caliper setup.

This is how i see this.. Maven definitely knows his ****...we all know this. He also is independent of OTTP, as he just gets some of their products to test them (just like LS1fbody). You're basically getting a review from an unbiased car expert here...why argue it?

Now if qwikredline or josh was making a thread like this, then sure, i can understand questioning it, as they are both tied to the product (though if qwik said so, and said it was used on koni cars and time attack cars, i would trust him regardless, as he's a very helpful guy)

well that should be expected, seeing as it reuses the stock caliper, i would hope they would be significantly cheaper than and other bbk
this kit is 879 for the fronts, which includes new 2-piston calipers along with the oversized, i would hope these would be closer to the $500 mark for the front brakes

i bet it's pretty hard to use a jack with a 1" long handle. Make it 3 feet, and it's effortless. Same principle.

If you can't figure out what i mean by that, don't bother to post.

The key to these is the quality(and size) of the rotor as well as the fact that its a floating rotor system, floating rotors arent cheap, theres a one time expense of the hat which costs more than many basic blank rotors do, it wont be $500 but it will be worthwhile, and the people who appreciate the level of these parts will see the value.

And HK is absolutely correct, I have no ties to OTTP. Ive never met them, Ive only talked to Josh as a customer, if I want to order stuff from them I pay the same price as you do.

SS/TC rotor kit is in planning/preproduction stages.......Powell/OTTP know that they are wanted and are working hard to get a quality product out at a great price, I actuallt have to email them the specs today.

Ok, so I see the weight difference, and I've read all the other posts but I fail to see the most important thing - which brakes have the better stopping ability (shorter stopping distance, consistency, etc.)? All that's been said thus far seems like speculation to me.

any plans to produce things like this for the 2.2 4 lug setup ? theres a company working on a rear brake conversion and are using a 9.3" solid disks for the rear due to using a vented rear would cause it to be just slightly bigger then the front rotors..

if OTT put together a hardcore brake package for the 4 lugs using the astra brakes like you outlined it would open up the possibilities for vented rears that are 10.1 " sorry for the jacking .. i'm just curious
