06 v6 Stang vs 2.2L Auto

So my younger brother has a friend with 06 V6 mustang (stick) with dual exhaust and 18" lightweight race wheels. My bro cody wanted to see what my car really had, since I had been saying that the 2.2L auto balt is no slouch.

Now this kid has won a lot of races at his high school. He beats "heavily" modded ricers beats cavi's, lancers, imprezzas, and basically everything but the "daddy gave it to me" cars. As well as saying he has beaten cobalts. He can actually powershift and everything.

So my bro hops into the stang, thinking that he will spank me even with him in it. We head over to a 1 mile stretch of road with 10' walls on either side, and no roads opening up to it for 1 mile.

1st run- Dig to 90. He counts to three and we go, I spank him off the line even with moderate wheel spin. By 50 I have 4 cars on him. Then as soon as my car shifts to 3rd, he starts slowly reeling me in. 90 I shut down and have a full 2 cars on him.

2nd run - 20 to 90. I honk, and I pull intantly again to about 3 cars. By 90 he is about half a car back.

3rd run - 40 to 90. 2.2L 3rd gear can suck my huevos!! I instantly pull 1.5 cars on him, and then shift to third and he reels me in quick. and he catches me by 90 and wins by about 1/2 car.

4th run - My younger bro gets in my car. Dig to 90. Spank him again 4 cars instant, with about 2 cars on him at 90.

5th run- 20 to 90. Bro still in toe. Spanked again at the start, and finish with about 1 car on him.

6th run- 40 to 90. Bro still in toe. Spanked off the start, reels me in quick and finishes with about 1 car ahead of me.

So what have we learned??

A Cobalt LS with basic bolt ons will beat a new V6 stang (stickshift) to about 80-90mph. After that, the stang wins every time.

And I know it is only 1 mustang, but I've rode with him before, and he is actually a pretty good driver. Not the best, but definately above average.

Rack up another kill.

Stock, that car is capable of high 14's. By 90, he should be ahead of an auto 2.2 by several cars, but you outdrove him... several times.

Nice runs... sounds like he might have been getting a little cocky, so congrats on bringing him back down to earth. Again, nice runs.

Thanks man. But yeah, I pulled on him till about 65-70, when he starts coming back. After 90, he isn't just passing me, he is blowing by me like I was standing still. Kinda like a SS/SC.

I only wish I could change my 3rd gear to a much shorter gear, while leaving 4th for good mileage. I mean 3rd goes from 70mph to 115.

Yeah, it sounds like you're are a significantly better driver than he is, and that's putting you ahead of him at the beginning... a time where a 5-speed RWD car w/ 240 ft*lb of torque should do fairly well, and then his car eventually just outpowers the Cobalt and passes you, despite his incompetence.

Basically, sounds like you know how to drive your Cobalt

Yeah, 70-115... that's ridiculous. What the heck do you even need 4th gear for?

Obviously, it's for economy, not acceleration, but man, that's gotta be annoying. It's like having TWO overdrive gears.

yep. that's a 4 speed auto for ya! the guy in the mustang obviously can't drive worth a damn, because he should be easily taking you off the line. 14 second car vs. 16 second car assuming good drivers. and there's no way he makes up 2 seconds after 90, not possible.

nonetheless, good race.

It's a sad day when RWD gets holeshotted by FWD

Yeah, third is real annoying. I am guessing on the 70-115mph thing, but I'm still in 3rd gear and have about 200 rpm when I hit my governor at 112mph. I wonder if anyone makes different gears for the auto tranny yet?

I have an idea. Maybe we should switch cars and race. Maybe then the mustang will win.

05-06 LS w/ steelies 105 don't know why they have it so low
05-07 LS/LT w/ alloys 120mph due to T rated tires
07 LS w/ steelies 112mph due to S rated tires and higher output motor

I'll take a pic at 112 the next time I have the camera in the car and have an open road.

I put 1-2 cars on 2.4L SS's from 0-60mph. Hell, I bet I could take a stock SS/SC off the line on the street. I've never raced one from a dig, so I dunno.

By the way, the 2.4 and 2.2 have the same auto tranny gearing, and you ain't gonna catch anything w/ more power than you if you don't get him off the line.

Actually 3rd gear goes well beyond 115.

At 125mph it is only at ~5600 rpm

good thing races arnt from 0-20 or else ud win!

yeah i can take a ss/sc about 3 cars off the line and i got video proof of it...but guess what..around 2nd they pick up steam, i ran 15.46 he ran 14.46 to give u the difference of a stage 2 ss/sc vrs a 2.4 stock..

and a 5spd RWD v6 mustang should be able to take you off the line, i dont care what other people say...RWD>FWD for digs its just that simple

Who? the 2.4's? or the 2.0's?

Cuz I've raced 3 different 2.4's and had a car or two on all of them to about 60-65 and then they slowly catch and then inch away. By 100, they are gone.

I've only raced one 2.0ss/sc w/ stage 2 from a 65 roll when I had about 5 cars to start. Let me tell you it wasn't pretty.

The funny thing is that I have wider tires than most of the 2.0's I've seen around my area. So I get better traction

70-115 does suck for third gear, but thats about the same as my stang was with stock gearing 75-115,now it's maybe 60-90mph.

Hmm I believe this happend but your buddy's driving is def. at fault ...... i have fool boltons, vector tuned tranny and engine.. and i can barely by a hair beat my buddies stock 2006 v6 5 spd mustang. now as far as the 2.2 goes in my experience i have been rocked by them off the line but ... come 35mph .....I eat them alive ..... i dont see why it would be different in the case of the mustang especially since they make modded ss 2.4 #'s stock ........
