07 SS S/C VS. TRD supercharged scion TC

Well last week my friend got a brand new black TC. I got to admit its pretty sexy. Its stick and it has the supercharger package. He also got a 7 inch display in the front console. He wanted to race me when he got it, but i figured i would give him some time to learn how to drive his car. So today i figured i would give him a run. Ive heard alot about the supercharged Tc's and alot of what i heard was definatly true. They could be the slowest FI car on the market. I ran him from a light, and i figured i would give him the launch as well. I beat him by about eight cars to the end of third. He was driving a corolla b4 this it was stick as well so i dont think he could be that bad a driver. Plus i gave him time to get used to his car. Over all i have to say they are very nice cars and there pretty quick, but compared to the SS S/C , they dont even come close.

TRD....Toyota Racing Development.....

Anywas, I've run a turbo charged one before and it put up a pretty good fight. But I've heard the supercharged ones are dogs, like low 15's in the 1/4. Good kill none the less

Don't they only make about 200hp crank?

I met a kid at the gas station that has the Greddy Turbo, and put 245 to the wheels with it. We didn't race, but we talked. I would really like to race him, because the fastest turbo tC I have seen only ran a 14.5 on 8psi, and that is comparable to his setup, and I would kill that any day. Still would like to run him though to see if they are faster from a roll (no doubt)

I love killing the tC's that don't know what they are dealing with. They seem to want to race more than most cars, and I usually give them a head start and reel them in and then fly by so my exhaust and engine come screaming by them to let them get the "surround sound" effect.

160bhp vs. stage 4/5 SS (~260whp) LOL

Here is What edmunds has to say for it:

The first acceleration run is worthless, nothing but front-tire spin and smoke. Easing up the second time around, we bog the engine, miss a shift, and turn in a quarter-mile time that could vote.

You would think we were trying to launch a nitromethane-spewing Top Fuel dragster, but instead we're behind the wheel of a 2006 Scion tC coupe that looks like it could barely chirp the tires.

Ordinary tCs do struggle to grab rubber, but this is no ordinary Scion. Under the hood of this tC sits a centrifugal supercharger developed by Toyota Racing Development (TRD). It's squeezing 7 pounds of boost into the stock 2.4-liter four-cylinder with the help of a revised air intake. Bigger fuel injectors and a remapped engine control unit (ECU) assure an adequate mix of fuel and spark while a TRD exhaust spits out the leftovers.

Still, it's no Hemi Charger, so we continue to rip it down the drag strip in search of a respectable quarter-mile time.

Oldest trick in the book
Superchargers are old, older than cars in fact. They work on a pretty simple idea: instead of relying on the engine to suck in its own air, you force-feed it with compressed air. By stuffing in more air, you can add more fuel and the result is more horsepower.

Sounds simple, but it's easy to screw up. That's why aftermarket superchargers rarely come with a warranty.

With TRD's setup, the tC retains its 3-year/36,000-mile factory drivetrain warranty as long as everything is dealer-installed, a 6-to-8-hour process by Toyota's estimates. Combine that with the $3,200 cost of the supercharger and you're looking at around $3,500 minimum on top of the tC's $16,200 base price. Do the work yourself and the warranty drops to 12 months or 12,000 miles.

Second time around
A few more runs and we're finally getting the hang of the tC's power. Its supercharged thrust is instant, so the tC takes a restrained foot to keep it hooked up. Even with our test car's optional 18-inch EMX wheels and Pirelli P Zero Nero tires (225/40R18), traction is a problem.

We shouldn't be surprised. Adding the supercharger gives the tC a solid 200 horsepower at 6,200 rpm according to TRD. That's 40 more horses than the stock tC and 200 rpm higher on the powerband. Torque is up, too, from 163 pound-feet at 4,200 rpm to 184 lb-ft at the same speed.

Not exactly Neon SRT-4 numbers, but they do stack up pretty well against the 2006 Honda Civic Si, which puts out 197 hp and 139 lb-ft from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder.

After a few more runs down the drag strip, we nail the launch and click off a 7.2-second 0-to-60 time and a 15.1-second quarter-mile. Solid times that are identical to the numbers we ran in the Civic Si. With a limited-slip splitting up the torque, there's no doubt that the tC would be quicker, but as of right now, Scion doesn't offer one.

if i had a scion tc i'd throw an aftermarket turbo on em and make some real power, but the trd s/c does not do nearly enough for those cars, makes them run as fast as a new civic si... a supercharged 2.4L should walk one.. but they dont and its sad, and i'm moving today and drunk!

hm, well atleast I know now that I'm quicker than one. But they've gotta have some nice upgrades for that setup.

an SS/SC is only a high 14 sec. car in stock form vs low 15's from this car and look what that can do with a smaller pulley. I would assume that if they opted for the package they wouldn't keep it stock.

IDK, can you really swap pulleys on Centrifugal superchargers?

He is referring to us here in Arizona, when the best any of us could really hit stock was a 14.8 - 14.9 The heat and climate kill us here.

I've run with a 8PSI Greddy Turbo & intercooled tC. They're pretty sweet little cars. About 240 to the wheels. We ran from a ~50 roll and I was pulling on him pretty good top end. Those turbos are small so they spool fast... not much lag. They only rev to 6500 or so... and they are geared terribly short so he was shifting way before I was. They just seem to run out of steam once you hit 100... guess the turbo runs out of juice.

Funny thing... he's wanting to sell the car now LOL.

There is a stage 3 (called stage 1.5, starting from stage .5) for the Scion tC's...made power, like...400+whp.

But nice kill. Those TRD supercharged tC's aren't all the rage as people make them out to be.
