2.4 vs. GST.. Best of 3..

Hey guys..

Not endorsing street racing.. But this happened last night.. Lightly modded 2.4 verses decently to well-modded Eclipse GST.. If you have a problem, click back now.. Thanks..

So as I leave class last night, I notice a black Eclipse pulling down the road across the intersection.. He spotted me as well, pulled out, then sped around me.. I noticed wheels, exhaust, tails, and one hell of a blow off valve.. Not thinking much of it, I let it go.. But once I approached the intersection I noticed he was going to be next to me.. I wasn't about to initiate anything, but after pulling up, he did anyway.. I few loud revs.. He wanted to make sure I heard his blow off valve through my closed windows.. I look over and laugh.. He continued.. I notice a clear intersection, highway, and no one behind us.. I open the side compartment, switch my Shift Plus on and to Stage 2, and just sit there.. I don't rev or anything.. Just look forward.. I drop the shifter to low.. I see the light switch and begin pulling out.. I hear him getting ready to wind it out so I punch it.. The tires squeal while I round the bend, then they get traction after getting back to a straightaway.. I advance the tranny to intermediate at redline and the tires chirp while shifting to 2nd.. The tach advances to redline again, then to 3rd gear.. At this time, I notice the Eclipse that was neck-and-neck to me a moment ago, was now a few cars back.. I notice the road is still clear and keep going.. At 110 I look back and notice he's now several cars back.. I back off.. Happy with my victory, but relieved for it to be over, I back down to a reasonable 60 and cruise along.. He approaches me from the passengers side.. Gets right next to me and revs again.. What the hell.. So we go again, but this time from 60.. The 2.4 keeps up with him initially, but since he was already in boost he advances.. I'm 2 cars back before he stops.. Obviously not letting it go unsettled, we go again.. Same set-up.. I figure the same thing will happen, but you can't let an open freeway go unclaimed.. Once again, I keep up, but still fall short.. He backs off, gives me a thumbs up and gets off the next exit..

A few things need to be said here.. First.. I rarely ever street race.. I never initiate anything, but if someone calls you out and the coast is clear with cars and the road conditions are safe, there's nothing wrong with a quick jaunt down the road.. Second.. I figured I was gonna lose anyway, but I just wanted to see what happened.. I know alot of the guys in the area and didn't know him.. I wanted to see what it ran..

I raced my friends 2.2 LS (2.4 manifold, GMPP cat-back, GMPP intake, etc) and got a few cars on him.. Twice.. I knew I'd kill a non-turbo Eclipse, but I wasn't sure how the turbo one would fare.. It was a '95 style with the older rear bumper.. '98 front end conversion.. The thing was quick and sounded good.. I don't know exactly what kind of mods he had, but I'd be curious to know.. I know if I had an SS s/c I would've taken him, but I believe it shows alot about the 2.4 that I actually took him easily from the dig race.. But the races from a roll were no match since he was turbo and manual whereas I was n/a and auto.. Plus, those are lighter as well.. But overall though, not a bad performance from a mostly stock 2.4 against a modified turbo car.. My mods (that'd count in this situation) is an Injen SRI, GMPP cat-back, and a ram-air hood (to scoop the air onto the filter).. So honestly, I was at like 185 hp.. He was at like 200 stock.. Even if he just had light mods, I still can't say the 2.4 did too bad.. I raced a friend in a B16'd '99 Civic hatchback with light mods before too (before my cat-back) and either beat him or was neck-and-neck all 3 races..

Any similar races for you guys? Just wanted to know how the 2.4 did compared to similar cars.. I'm sure it'll be even better after I complete the header/dp/cat and a tune..

from reading some of these war stories posts looks like 2.4s have more potential than people think...

congrats on those races, what does a stock 2.4 net in the 1/4 and what trap speed?

5-spd does about 15.6-15.7 @ 90ish in the hands of the average driver.

Low 15's are possible stock.

A "decently" modded Eclipse GST should have around 300+whp and a "well" modded Eclipse GST should have 500+whp via an upgraded turbo, fuel system, cooling mods, etc etc. GST/GSX's have the 4G63, which is the same engine as the older EVO's......and while its an older model 4G63, its still a 4G63 nontheless, and I've seen those hit over 1,000whp.

My 2.4SS with a CAI, full exhaust (catless) and HP Tuners tuning would be lucky to see 180-185whp.

Its a good kill regardless, but it sounds like you raced a GST with a cat-back and an un-needed BOV at most.

stock to lightly modded gsts are really nothing. I beat my friends every time in my dakota and he has a catback, intake, and a bov, typical lol.

I think I held my own considering lightly modded 2.4 auto vs. lightly modded turbo manual.. Plus our cars are really computer controlled.. I don't think it was too bad overall..

Anyone know if these 2.4's are kin to the 2.4 "Quad Four"?

I'm guessing it's a completely different animal altogether but I've only owned the Quad4 so I don't know.

From the little that I know about them, I'd say no. It kinda seems like the 2.2 motor bored out and with stronger internals and VVT.. I think? lol. But I'm probably wrong.. Regardless, it's a dope motor, as the Quad's were back then.. Anyone know..?

im not gonna bash the 2.4 cause my friend had a 2.4 with e/dp/i/t and i was stage 2 and i didn beat him by that much only 1 car and a half...so they do have potiential if you know what you doing with them
