2.4SS vs. 99-02 cav Z24

Well me and my friend were leaving the usual gathering spot friday night and we were rolling down the highway and we came upon a stretch of open road my friend yelled to me if I wanna run since there was no traffic and I said "sure why the hell not." So we were rolling at around 60mph and we both pretty much gunned it at the same time. we stayed dead even until 90mph and I start pulling him, not by much though then we shut off at 100. I was pretty amazed it was that close. All he has is an Intake and thats it. Anyone know how much hp and torque the 2.4 twin cam push out? Also he is auto and all my mods are in my sig.

the weight of your car gave him an upper hand in hanging with you.

Not too sure about that; the Z24 weighs more than the SS.

That has to be for an auto, the Z24 is capable of reaching 60 a second faster than that. Even if it is an auto, too, my girlfriend's auto Z24 could keep up with my Pontiac, which was about 8 flat to 60, so hrm... great info otherwise, though. The engines are closer in power output than their ratings would make them out to be, although I suspect that guy had a little more than an intake to hang with you that long. Unless of course he's got a stick, since you have an auto. The gearing of the stick would make up for some of the power difference as well. Good race.

Bone stock, the Z24 LD9 2.4 could run 15.8-16.0 average. Fastest bone stock was a 15.2 factory freak.

There is a noticable power difference between the 2.4 LD9 and the 2.4 VVT. My 96 Sunflower GT had a Ractive intake, high flow cat and mufflers and while those mods really woke up the highway performance, third gear still didn't pull anywhere near as hard as what my G5 does stock.

i dont know man but i raced my share of z24s with my old 04 cav auto.. they beat me off the line but i ended up pulling on them at higher rpms.. and i was stock, dont know about the z.. race him from a stop and see who will win .. autos dont like racing from a roll specially between 50-60.

wanna race my z24? lol yeah 2.4 cavys run stock at 150hp which to the wheels is only like 130ish was what mine dyno'd at stock. i ran a 15.9 stock but with a intake you can get them into mid 15's.

Ha! My girl had a late 80s Z24...

I have the 2.0 SC and she was definitely going 0-60 in some where around 7 sec...

The first time I lined up with her she warned me and told me she took it to the track once when she was 17 and wasted a riced out eclipse... made the guy pretty pissed...

Any how I underestimated it went half throttle and off the line she had me pretty good... not until about half way through second gear did I pass her...

The Z24s were worthy of that badge!

The rear wheel drive on hers seemed to have helped a ton and it was a V6 not a 4...

After that first time running her I never took it easy again but she would always have me right at first... damn wheel hop.

Jack, all Cavalier Z24's were FWD. And if it was a late 80's, it had the 2.8 V6 which made the car a low to mid sixteen 1/4 runner.

the old ones had a totally different engine, i think 2.8 or 3.1's, we're talking 2.4 dohc (twin cam) here 96-02, the 03-05 have 2.2 eco's and the 95's had the 2.3 HO engine

It was definitely rear wheel drive man... it was OLD! It didn't share a single part with our cars like ^^^ that guy said... it was a totally different car... but I still say they were worthy of the badge Z24 just like the 2.4 ecotec is worthy of the SS badge.

They were never 'fast' cars but they would hang with the competition...
