2006 2.4 SS vs 2000 Jetti 1.8 Turbo
A girl I work with just got a 2000 VW Jetta, she said it was a 1.8 Turbo. I know nothing of the car but she said she can't wait to beat my ass in the spring. I asked if it was a 5spd or a 6 because I knew nothing about the car and she says its actually an Auto with that +/- manual side thingy.
Are these things quick and do I stand a chance with my 2.4 SS? Mine is a manual so I think that would give me a slight edge.

Well if she actually knows how to use the sportstronic shift, it is actually beeter than having a 5-spd. But i dont know a lot about that car, but my money is on you if you can drive.

150hp/155lbs-ft. They have neat 5 valve head too. But it redlines pretty low (?)
2002s went to 180hp
Although thoise shiftt-tronic, manu-matic autos are cool--it will be faster if its just left in drive.

My g/f has an '02 1.8 Turbo Jetta
I thought that they were all 180 HP; I just know that hers feels really quick and the best way to drive that tiptronic in a race is to just leave it in auto and floor it and hold it. It is a 5-spd tranny though and first is geared pretty low I believe. I do know that hers gets moving to be a 4-door VW. It can be quite fun to race. Only thing I ever raced it against was an Eclipse convertible; beat it twice in short runs.
I don't like them for around town driving b/c it fells like every time you mash the gas, it has to think about which gear to select.
That's just all I know to tell ya.

Okay I'll amend my statement if you amend yours.
There could be some that are faster--if it does shift low. Belive it or not some cars are slower if you redline them. Fords Cobra Mustangs with the NA 32valve---68000 rpm. Every magazine sadi they get the best times shifting below that.
But I'd say some are slower. Some automatics do shift at redline when just left in drive.
NOw an SMG transmission is a completley different animal--if thats what your talking about.
Car and Driver did a review of a 5-6 cars with automatics that have manual shifting mode.
ALmost all were slower when done that way and faster when just left in drive.

Intersting but I am not sure why you posted stats for a more powerful model year.
Those are not stats for a year 2000, which is the car in question. A simple google search can tell you this.
It has 150hp and is an auto. It won't be close. Look at the 1/4 mile you posted. 15.7!!! And thats a manual! Plus the Jetta is nearly 200lbs heavier.
A 5 speed 2.4L will kill it

stock auto 1.8t are slow may give you a run cus you are an auto also.
there is two type of 1.8t in the jetta form the 1.8t and the GLI 1.8t
1.8t puts down 130 whp at 6000 rpms
with and intake 135 whp
she will need to up the boost to run with you!
(but im not sure what th SS 2.4 puts sown to the wheel thoe)

Depends on if you can drive your SS and if its auto/manual. My friend has an 02 1.8t, thing is slow as hell stock, he was running high 16s, low 17s stock, its an auto. But all he did was get a chip and did an airbox mod now hes running 15.2-15.4.

I beat a new 2.0T Jetta with the 6 speed by about 1/2 a car length.... and I had a passenger and a trunk full of clothes.... you should be able to take a 1.8 easily.

The 1.8T is a GREAT engine.. I can't say enough good things about it. However, the Jetta as well as its sister car the Audi A4 are heavy cars which kills their performance. If the Jetta is 4MOTION/quattro it might take a 2.4SS off the line, otherwise you shouldn't have any problems.
Happy hunting.
