Yeah... They suck ass! They're a real let down... and they don't deserve the SS title. There is a Monte SS S/C... but I don't think they made it this year... But from what I hear they aren't really race tuned like a Cobalt SS/SC. Impalas and monte's are made more family oriented... they do have power that can be tapped though.

They don't suck ass and they do deserve the ss title. usually an ss has more power, an apperance package, better suspension etc. which a new monte ss has all of just like a cobalt ss. If it doesn't deserve the SS name then neither does the cobalt. I do agree with you though that they are more family oriented. The supercharged v6 monte ss is dead. It was slow anyway it only ran low 15's. Then new one has a 5.3L v8 and runs very low 14's or high 13's stock.

stock for stock from a dig i'd give it to the impala. i've seen what they do there a solid high to mid second car like the cobalt. maybe even low 14's consistatly. Plus there automatic so its easier to bang out the same track times back to back more.
edit now that i think about it they can run low 14's easier than our cobalts

I guess MPs think alike then cause I raced an impala "ss" the other day and it was a huge let down.... i went so far as to give him a couple cars from a rolll and still passed him when i hit the next gear. then my buddie and i him in his car were nehind him at a stop light and he took off so we followed suit and both past him from then too. I just dont think the new impala ss has much ss about it. they should do what dodge has been doing if it's an ss like an SRT put some forced induction on it.

I have seen a stock Grand Prix GXP run a 13.8. The Impala and the Monte have the same 5.3 V8 engine and are pretty much the same elsewhere. I do not think a stock SS/SC will beat any of those stock for stock.

That is faster 0-60, quarter-mile, and top speed than a stock SS/SC. Hardly a slouch. You point out another mid-size 4-door FWD car stock that has that good of numbers. There aren't many.
Only thing I hate about it is it doesn't get the wider front tires, Bridgestone rubber and Blistein shock package like it's clone, the Grand Prix GXP. Those really helped the handling. Larger front tires counter understeer and the shocks keep it more composed during aggresive driving. It needs a 6-speed transmission too. I am still amazed the GM is using 4-speed autos when they have so many engines running VVT, DOD, and direct injection (OK, just the 2.0L Turbo). You'd think they'd realize that the engine is only as good as what bolts to it! I ont't buy a GM auto vehicle until it has a 6-speed auto. GM, join the 21st century please!
Part of the reason the Impala SS feels so uncomfortable with the V-8’s power is that it doesn’t benefit from all the chassis tweaks bestowed on the Grand Prix GXP. Opt for the Chevy, and you don’t get the Pontiac’s wider front wheels and sticky Bridgestone tires, Bilstein shocks, and larger brakes. Although the SS’s chassis gets its own special anti-roll bars, bushings, and shock and spring rates, the suspension simply monkeys around too much.

I think the GXP and Impala SS would take a stock SS/SC off the line but from a roll the SS/SC would definitely win. After doing a bit of research I found that typically a stock GXP/Impala SS dyno's around 242WHP. Typical stock SS/SC dyno's around 215WHP and is 600lbs lighter. Also most 1/4 times for GXP/SS are quicker but the trap speed is lower than the SS/SC. I think the GXP/SS have a large torque advantage for some low down grunt, but the SS/SC is a true roll rocket.

I'll take back my comment about them sucking ass. They don't suck ass and they do deserve the SS... I was buzzing on a 1 pound bag of Skittles and got a little bit too excited and went too far. Every race I've done with one was from a roll as well at about 35 mph, and we all know that's what Cobalts excell at. I am however, disappointed in them... as mi6 said they need that 6 SPEED transmission. They've got more basic power capabilities... basic things GM should and could be putting into them... like they did back in the day with SS's. SS's shouldn't be family tuned!

I haven't raced a new monte carlo SS yet I think that would be a better race but i still have a hard time believing that the impala is as fast as you all think it is. I've been next to one and has was racing if he wasn't then he was just driving at 120mph with two tunner cars for the hell of it. which wasn't the case since he instigated the races. maybe it was a V6 hell I dont know but it clearly had SS badges on it.
I'm willing to bet that if one comes to the track here in town it's not going ot be throwing down low 14's.

While it's great they are finally putting v8's in these two SS models, the garbage they are attaching to these engines is disappointing. 240 whp is not impressive on a v8 with that kind of displacement (5.3L). When they put the 6speed manual in the monte that they use on the vette and gto, then it may be a car worth buying. And why not make a monte with different badging with the LS2 engine? If they can cram it in that GTO, they sure as heck can get it in the monte.

Yeah i did understand what you meant. Its unfortunate how things have changed. If the new monte ss had been rwd with a 6 speed and and Ls2 i would have bought one. It isn't though and thats why i have an 85 monte ss instead.
