Cool Playing with a GT-500

This morning driving into town on a 5 lane county highway, a late model GT-500 passed me (2007 Cobalt SS 2.4L) doing about 65 in the 55. When his back bumper was even with my front bumper, I went WOT so that he could hear the K&N SRI, then immediately let off the loud petal. When he was about three car lengths ahead, he apparently went WOT and rapidly accellerated for a bit, then slowed down and pulled into the left turn lane at the next intersection and light.

I pulled in behind him and when the left turn arrow changed green, he turned left into the right lane and I turned left into the left lane. We both went WOT at about the same time and he quickly pulled away to about 2 -3 car lengths when we both let off at 60 (rural 4 lane) and an up coming red light.

At that light we ran from a dead stop to about 45 mph, (the speed limit) side by side, then let off.

At the next red light, I already had my window down and held up 4 fingers. When he rolled his window down, I asked him what he was running and he said a stock 4.6... I told him mine was a stock 2.4 with no S/C... He just shook his head and gave me the thumbs up.

We played going WOT to 25-30 at a couple more lights then he turned off.

Seemingly this morning's experience just a bit of good natured "testing" and not hard competition as I've routinely seen this Yellow GT-500 in the morning commute. No doubt we'll cross paths again.

Interesting, bet you had some fun playing. Kind of reminds me something like the GM commericals with cobalts playing ball with a Vette.

It wasn't a GT-500 then, they dont have a 4.6 in them, they have a 500hp 5.4L SC motor in them.

It was probably a Shelby GT,just a regular GT with 25 more hp and some shelby appearance stuff. And oh yeah a totally bullshit sticker price becauce it says shelby on the side[high $30s].

Even if it was a regular GT there is no way a 2.4 could keep up

No doubt,not without F/I or spray,but 2-3 lengths to 60 sounds about right,thats a really short race.

Nope just like any other high 12 second capable 2006 GTO.

Best GTO = 12.7
Best GT500 = 12.4

I know a GT500 is faster but not fast enough to make up for good driver vs bad driver.

Make your first post in this thread your last so you don't ruin this one too.

Nope, not a Shelby GT. Yellow GT-500... and the kid said stock 4.6! I don't know what year, or even care. The driver and car are on the daily commute and I see them frequently even tho I'm retired.

This "war story" was all about just having some fun, not any pure competition!

LS2 GTO's aren't exactly slow man.

Fastest GT-500 on record has a 12.1 QM time. Fastest LS2 GTO is 12.7. Like Cody said though, on average you are looking at 12.4-12.6's for the GT-500's and 12.8's -13.0's in the LS2 GTO's.

I could completely see a stock LS2 GTO at least making a valiant effort against a GT-500. Especially if you have a good driver and a shitty driver.

The first time I played with a local older fellow who had money to blow. We Squared off at a stop light and both gave it hell half way through second. He only pulled on me around 80mph and even then it was only a few feet.

The second time was cruising down the highway this one was just passing through because I have never seen him again. We went from around 40mph and by 120mph he had me by a car or a little more.

When I played with a stock 03/04 Cobra it was a drivers race. But we all know how many stock 03/04's are around now.

I can see that. GT500's are fast, but not as fast as people "think" they are...kinda the opposite of the LS2 Gto..typically a lot faster than people "think" they are.

LOL It was beacause they did make a yellow (non GT500) and then orange two totaly different colors.

Also there will be faster times with these cars I'll put money on it. A hair over 10,000 were made as of now, and almost 500 still haven't been sold. Then you have to take in that many people are storing them as a collectors car and that many of the ones driving them are old guys that dont know how to drive them. I would say less than 10% of the guys that own them are racing them and less the half of them know how to drive.

Wait till the beginning of 08, I think they'll be at sticker by then and the Termi guys will be picking them up and putting down some good numbers.

one reason because there 10,000 to 20,000 over book half the time. most guys that own "terminators" already have them faster than a gt500 or c6 z06s'...personally i think gt500 is ugly as **** (mainly the rims)and hugely overrated... on the street a stock 03/04 cobra vs a stock gt500 is a drivers race.

Maybe in Cali there 10-20k over but right now there at 5k over, some already at sticker but they'll all be at sticker by early next year or maybe before. Trust me many termi guys are just wating for them to hit sticker or less so they can ****** one up.

Looks wise is all personal opinion, I didn't like them when I first saw them but they grew on me just like the 05 body style in general. Yes the rims are ugly, DGussin has CCWs on his and it looks ******* sweet but at like $1200 a rim is kinda pricy.

As for them being over rated yes and no, they arent much out of the box but thats becasue Ford put a ***** tune in them, guys have picked up 50-75rwhp with tune only and no Cobra ever did that. They have a stronger transmission, better clutch, bigger and stronger motor, better brakes, better suspension, nicer interior, and best of all solid axle. Most people ******* the car are the die hard Cobra boys that dont want to admit that there is a better Mustang or people that dont know **** about them. Most of the Cobra guys are finally admitting that they aren't POS as they once said but some still are. The thing is 5.4 motor is just a beast once you start modding it, its stronger and makes more power mod for mod.

Its biggest down fall is its heavy, but even then its only 200lbs more than the 03/04 Cobra so Cobra guys talking **** about the weight make me laugh.

If places like Mustangforums wouldn't have hyped it up so much people like me would keep my mouth shut. People were calling it a Z06 killer and titled it a super car when it is neither.

I myself like the idea behind the car I just hate the way it was carried out.

I've never heard anyone call it a super car but yes people were hyping it up because it was a "Shelby" like it was something special what no one realized is that it was his name and nothing else, he contributed his name and saying it needed bigger tires. If Shelby would have actually put something into it he wouldn't have anything to make more money from thats why he is making Super Snakes and the KR now. People called it a Z06 killer because it had 500hp not realizing how much it weighed, hell trucks have 500hp and they're slow as ****! I knew it would be pretty quick and would have awsome mod potential but I knew it would be no where close to a Z06 killer.

I kind of like them only because of the brute stock power levels but the dealer mark up is bullshit.

I think it's funn how Ford is making FRPP parts for the GT500 but 9 out of 10 of the people who own them won't touch the car beyond driving it.
