Ok, since I have NO clue at all.
How come sportbikes are faster with less hp and tq?
Power to weight...it is how a Lotus Elise is fast too, but since they are torqueless wonders as well they must be slow.
TDI Jettas are the fastest 4 cyl you can buy. Hands down. They have more torque than most.

Hooray, I know...but people need to get off carrol shelby's little quote he had

I am not saying tq is not important...it doesn't make or break a race car though...seriously most race cars(other than drag cars) have a very flat and broad power band with a table top of HP so it allows over rev and will require less gear change

Is it natural that when I was in my auto 2.2L that I kept up with a good SI driver from a roll and a dig? He pulled on me at about 60 from a dig, and from a 30 roll about 60 still, but until then we stayed dead even.
I dunno....I was stock, he has an exhaust and an intake.....so...
I dunno, I'd think a 2.4 would rock out on it.

They are the fastest machines in the world. Tell me how my 45-50 lb-ft of tq won't make most of the cars out on the road look retarded for trying to race me. It isn't all about tq, there is gearing and weight issues too.
That is why 400+hp cars exist that struggle to get into the 12s and yet it is possible for a 300whp (insert generic sport compact car) can run 12s.
People need to shut the hell up and get over the fact that:
1. There are faster cars than Cobalts out there
2. Some of them are Hondas.

Wow where were you educated so I'll know to never have my kids attend those institutions. If you can even read a LITTLE, you'll see that my INITIAL contention was to the OP that said "TORQUE DOESN'T MATTER". I was trying to clarify with him if he means it doesn't matter at all, or at what level he felt it doesn't matter. Torque IS an accelerating force, weight has a play in it as well. To say Torque is insignificant is just a blanket stupid statement. I guess if you don't have torque then you're going to try to justify to yourself that "torque is insignificant" but you're still a tool ricer if you think that. Please tell me where you were "educated" so I can cross that whole region off my list.

In this case The civic's 110tq outran the 2.4ss with its 165tq.
Take a look at Thunderbird s/c for example. That car in 5spd form is a mid 15 second car AT BEST with 210hp and 315tq. THREE HUNDERED AND FIFTEEN TQ. Compare it to a similar wieght Taurus SHO 5spd with 220hp and 200tq a whole 115 less line them up and the SHO beats the s/c down BADLY.
If torque matters so much why does the car with 115 less ft/lbs of it shatter it in a race? Both 5spd cars and both around the same weight, not to mention the Supercoupe is RWD.
Explain that one to me...
