Worked an STI with my limp ccss3 gas tune...
Whelp, it has gotten rather cold in Wyoming (38 degrees tonight) and has been for a couple months now so I've to switched from my E85 tune back to a regular 91 octane tune now for a couple months. (14* timing FTL -- I miss my extra 40 horses. )
So anyway, out tooling around in my SS/TC I come across a lowered black 04-05 STI on some nice black OZ Ultraleggeras. Car is clean, lowered, has a non-canister style exhaust, and its pretty loud. I give him a little spool and BPV in 2nd gear as we are accelerating away from a stoplight. He responds. Almost both knowing we are gonna need a longer strecth of road with no traffic and outside of town, we start to follow each other heading out of town. Coming up to a 4-lane divided road that has nearly no traffic at night, he slows to around 30mph and waves out the window for me to get up next to him. I drop into 2nd and oblige. We match speeds, I hear him start to brake boost, I honk off 3 honks and we both rip into it. As boost peaks at 25psi, the front tires light up and the speedo jumps to 55mph and hangs momentarily while the STI waivers door to door with my rental car-esque Cobalt sedan. The tires chatter and catch and I begin to pull on the raspy black Subaru. NLS 2nd to 3rd with a satisfying pop and I see his car light up as he is just off my rear bumper. I'm in kill gear now, 3rd is long and unrelenting as the car torque-steers following the grooved pavement. The STI is still in it and falling back fast. I'm nearly at 100mph as I see his lights dip momentarily as he hits 4th gear. I chuckle in my head thinking, "Gee, he's only going about 85mph". This is getting bad, he's has got to be atleast 4 cars behind me. I NLS 3rd to 4th with another satisfying pop and watch him whisk through my cloud of fuel smoke as is fans out behind me. I run it out to about 115mph just to tack on a few more lengths and prove my point that his drivetrain loss is staggering the faster we go. About 6 or 7 lengths behind me I see him give up.
I brake and coast back down to about 50mph and get over infront of him and signal to turn into an upcoming gas station. He follows. Stopped and bullshitted with him for about 15 mins. Pretty cool guy, I actually ran him a few years ago before I had my SS/TC and I had a WRX with a 20g and he had a WRX with a 20g. Turns out his STI had an intake, full catless turboback, and was running an 18psi Cobb Accessport Protune. He just bought a Blouch 20G XT, FMIC, and a meth kit and hopes to be pushing 380awhp by the spring. I told him jokingly I'll have to fire up my E85 tune to hang. (In all actuality, he probably won't make 380awhp and I'll still pull him from a roll.)
He decided he wants to run again, but he wants to do a 10mph roll. I suggest a stop, but he's wary of his clutch and we agree on a 10mph roll. So we roll back out and line up, perhaps he's thinking my lack of traction will benefit him at a lower speed. He honks it off and I hang doors with him through 1st and most of 2nd as I waste about 10 miles worth of tread off my front tires and yank him up to about 100mph just the same as the first race. I slow, give him a thumbs up and we part ways coming up an intersection and head our seperate ways.
Looking foward to disappointing him this spring if he gets his turbo upgrades done.

Nice runs my dude!! I know AWD is good for traction but at the same time you give up power loss to the extra weight. I give Evo IXs a problem which is a good race til 4th and i pull by a fender. Thats with no tune and just intake lol

Hahaha i remember 3rd gear when I was at 27 psi. It caught traction and you took of like a damn freight train. I can refer to this story so much haha. Lol subi's they are not as fast as they all think they are. Good kill man. Good story haha. I cant wait to get a retune to 24 psi..

STI's are as fast as everyone thinks they are. Cobalt SS's are NO WHERE near remotely close to what people think they are haha. No one in a STI probably ever expects to get butthurt by a cobalt.
I was talking with Derek Butts (yes thats his real name) the other day, New England Rep for Dinan Performance (BMW) and we were talking about the track days that he hosts across new england, he admitted right away even us in the m3's and older m5's have to watch out for those Turbo Cobalts!

No video guys, didn't have the GoPro in the car with me. But based on alot of the cars I've run and beat, this story of beating what is probably a 270awhp STI is easily feasible. I mean lookie here:
404rwhp Saleen S281 Supercharged Vs me on E85 and all-season street tires from a dig:
425rwhp Camaro Vs me on E85:

that said, I'd love to own a scoobaru as a second vehicle one day to have the best of both worlds. the expense of owning/modding one isnt very budget friendly to put mildly though.

thats actually the reason I like the cobalt.. I dont get looks. I have almost no attention from the cops, and being able to use the "but officer its just a cobalt" or "hey you got beat by a cobalt" line is awesome as nobody really knows alot about them and their potential (especially from me given I have the sedan)

I enjoy going to the dragstrip down in Colorado every now and then though. There's less people who recognize the car and even more who are uneducated. My best memory was when I was waiting in the staging lanes and there was a guy and his wife who had a 392 Challenger SRT8 and were staged next to me. I happened to overhear him joking about my car seat in the back and the drag radials on the front wheels. I joking poked fun back at him and told him, "And I'll bet it can still spank that Challenger." He didn't like that too much. We ended up running and he managed a 14.2 versus my 13.2 that run and I even tree'd him. lol. Didn't see him around for the rest of the night, I think he made it a point to avoid going straight back to the staging lanes so he wouldn't be lined up near me again.
