recommended tire size
Why does every site recommend a 215/40/18 tire for 18" wheels for a cobalt? Then they recommend a 225/45/18 tire for a 18" wheel on the cobalt ss? It just doesn't make sense!

im running on 225/45/17 on my RL and they are great ....... just make sure that with the 235's that you dont rub that would suck. but you should be able to run a max size at 235 .... 245 will most likely rub.

Why
Why is it necessary to have such a large rim size? For looks? I am only looking for a 215/40/16 but I have to change out a few parts because the ls only comes with 4 lugz and the rims I want (Konig-Sideways) are 5 lugz. Can a chevy dealership change this hub out for me?

I don't know why they wouldn't have Konigs in the 4x100 pattern, if I'm not mistaken that's also the bolt pattern on most Civics...would seem to me it should be fairly common.

215/45/18 is not a very common size there are only a few manufactures that make that size of tire.
225/40/18 is a very common size of tire that is why its reccomended because everyones makes that size tire but acceptable rim wdiths are 7.5-9. keeping in mine stock is a 7 inch rim.
225/45/18 is close to the orginal diameter a little wider and lil larger while retaining acceptable rim width of 7-8.5. IMO bigger is better.
235/40/18 is the closest to original but creates issues of rubbing and pushes the rim width to 8-9.5

I am real sorry to be ruing this post, but I thought I knew what most of the numbers were but now I am very doubtful. This is for the above post numbers...

Ok, so I am purchasing these wheels http://www.wheelmax.com/product.asp?ProdID=1677 as soon as I get my tax return back. My question is what would be the best fitment on a Cobalt LS for tire size? The site recommends 215/40/18 but I want to know what you guys think before I get them. I don't plan on buying lowering springs for my car in the near future if that helps at all. Sorry to jack the thread but I didn't think it was worth a new post.

I'm running 225/45/R18 on my SS. Nitto NT 555's. No rubbing and an excellent overall tire for the money. Mine only cost $135 a tire, the Pirellis run at about $250+ a tire. When your all done your spending almost $1200 to have them mounted, balanced with no warranty. Mine was $675 out the door.
There is one gentleman that is running 235/45/R18 but was slightly rubbing. I believe a tire this size is not a good idea overall IMO because your leaving yourself at risk of hiiting a bump and the tire hitting the inside fender wall causing a screw up.

2) you are crazy if you are going to be switching out to a 5 lug pattern, if you can't find anything in 4x100 that you like then you are one picky bastard. we have probably the most popular bolt pattern there is. and no I don't think a dealership would do something like that. that would have to be one of your own personal projects.
3)215/40/16 sounds like a pretty rubberband type tire...is that smaller than your stock wheel size?

Stock Rims+Wider Tires
I am looking at 225/40/18 for my SS stock rims. Does anyone have any experience with this tire size and the stock rim? I have gone to a site and looked up how much it will throw off my speedo (@ 60 mph indicated I will be going 61 mph). My real question here is will it fit w/o damage on the stock rim or is the rim to narrow?

In a word NO. I think people run 245s without problems on 8" wide rims. The question is how wide are your wheels? It is not recommended to put 235 width tire on a 7" wide rim. If you want to be happy for about 10 minutes go for it. You will realize that 235 on the stock 18x7 is a terrible idea because it will bulge. A 225/45-18 would work better if you have the 18x7 SC wheels. If you have 18x8 then you should be fine because that is what the 235 width tire is made for. Don't forget to get a wheel alignment after lowering. I think coilovers are a waste of time as well. You should just get a nice set of lowering springs and get it aligned and call it good.

Weird...they should mount very easily on 7.5" rims... almost like 225/40s. You're saying you had to *pinch* em on? Do you have TC rims, or are they SC and 7" wide? I would not put a 235 on a 7" wide rim.
