Tires for Autocross/Weekend driving

Hey guys looking for some advice on tires. I am looking to purchase some Michelin Pilot Super Sports in either 225/40/18 or 245/35/18 (not interested in 235/40s). I will be mounting the tires on 18x8.5 et 35 wheels.

The car is currently on custom stance coilovers with brembos. It will be used on the weekends and occasionally for autocross. The car will not be lowered all the way down to the point where the gap is gone but I would like to give it a good stance.

Do you guys have any experience with 245/35s rubbing? If so I may have to get the 225/40s so that the tires stretch just a little to fit in the wheel well.

Also if you have any pictures it would be appreciated

PS I did a search and this was probably the best page I saw regarding tires.

Why not just go with a 235/40/18?

3.38" for 240/35
vs
3.70" for 235/40

On 18x7.5 wheels the 0.32" difference shouldn't be that noticeable.

i run 235/40/18 and they look good. OP there are better tires than the pilot's, as many have relased good tires since those were the old standard. depends on how long you want the tread to last. 40 isnt bad for sidewall, 45 it starts getting big. I have some 45 drag radials and i actually think they look better than the lower profile tires.

I run 235/40R18 as well on the SS/TC wheels. Nice and square. PSS are a good tire, not something I would expect to be competitive at autocross though. For your 18x8.5 wheels I'd do the 245/35R18 tires. More rubber on the ground is going to give you a lot more grip, you can roll fenders as necessary unless your offset is to the moon.

Yeah to be honest I was going with Michelins based on prior experiences. They have been better than almost all the tires I have purchased.

Potenza RE-11s aren't in stock anywhere and I have read some good things about RS3s but don't have any experience with them

Offset right now is et 35 for my new wheels. Went and calcd some measurements and it seems as though 245/35 may poke past the fenders and rub if I am too low/bottom out

Keep in mind this is not my daily car and I will not doing autocross every weekend. It will be every now and then with mostly weekend driving when it is nice.

Realistically I should get wheels/tires specific to autocross. However, I am trying to cut down on cost and get the best of both worlds

Hancook RS-3 or Cooper RS3-S? I'm running the Coopers, great tire for the money. Ran them all season so far this year.

The Hancooks are a stellar tire for competitive autocross, been in Cobalts running them and it's like being glued to the track. The tire this year seems to be the RE-71R which I now have a set of but haven't had a chance to run yet.

I was referring to the Hancooks. I have read a lot of good things about the bridgestones for track purposes.

My biggest concern is that the 245/35s could poke past the fenders but I have no way of knowing until I try it out

You could always buy a set in the 245 and if they don't clear you can resale them. Somebody at autocross will probably want them.

I have a slightly different setup than you, but I'm running a 245/40 PSS on an 18x9 +40 wheel with a 5mm spacer up front and it fits without rubbing.

Very similar. Are you lowered on springs or coils at all?

Yes, I'm on Stance coils. Rears are two threads from maxed, not sure how many threads are up front but it's about a 1 1/2 finger gap.

Any side view pictures? It would be nice to see how they fit the wheel wells and if they poke out at all

I'm on Powell YYZ V5's and I run 255/35/18's for autocross and haven't experienced any rubbing. The Potenza RE71R is an EXCELLENT tire. If you're not concerned about treadwear, it would probably work perfect for you. If you are, the I run the Potenza S04 Pole Position(280TW) in a 235/40/18 and they are also outstanding tires with plenty of grip.
